Polypropylene

LyondellBasell’s range of polypropylene resins include engineered homopolymers, random copolymers and impact copolymers that offer optimum performance for customer injection molding, blow molding, film, fiber, sheet extrusion and thermoforming applications.

Benefits and Applications

Polypropylene is used in automotive parts, such as battery cases, fascia, running boards and bumpers. It is also used in housewares, appliances, grid-type flooring for sports facilities, tackle boxes, wood-plastic composites for decking, bottles and bottle profiles; and caps and closures.

Impact copolymer polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP) impact copolymers are thermoplastic resins produced through the polymerization of propylene. Copolymers are created by introducing a heterophasic structure inside a semi-crystalline PP homopolymer matrix.

Polypropylene is one of the world’s most versatile plastic materials. With its broad range of properties, the material is used to produce everything from packaging and housewares to automotive and electrical applications.

Benefits and Applications

Typical customer applications include:

Thick extrusion
Pipe
Film
Thermoforming
Injection molding (caps & closures, batteries, pails, automotive, TWIM)

Medium density polyethylene

Medium density polyethylene (MDPE), characterized by a linear polymer chain, is a thermoplastic resin produced through the low pressure polymerization of ethylene in gas phase reactors. MDPE can also contain small amounts of comonomers such as butene or hexene.

Benefits and Applications

Typical customer applications include:

Film
PE80 pressure pipe
Wire & cable
Anti-corrosion coating (ACC)

Linear low density polyethylene

LyondellBasell produces Petrothene linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) at two manufacturing locations; these products are used in film, molding and broad molecular weight LLDPE applications.

Benefits and Applications

LLDPE is used to produce garbage/lawn-leaf bags, housewares, bottles, profiles, coffee can lids and dairy product packaging, as well as large (rotomolded) parts such as outdoor gym sets, riding toys and tanks.

Low density polyethylene

LyondellBasell’s low density polyethylene (LDPE) resins are thermoplastics made from the polymerization of ethylene in autoclave or tubular reactors at very high pressures. Unlike low-pressure polymerization technologies, high-pressure polymerization allows the co-polymerization of ethylene with polar comonomers, such as vinyl acetate or butyl acrylate. The polymer is characterized by a highly-branched polymer structure.

The ability to manufacture products on high-pressure autoclave and tubular reactors creates a very broad product portfolio for versatile film applications. Grades for use in extrusion coating, injection molding, blow molding, sheet and profile extrusion as well as other applications are also available.

Benefits and Applications

LDPE is used in a wide range of customer applications, including:

Packaging film and bags for foodstuff and sanitary articles
Agricultural film
Surface protection film and lamination film
Shrink and stretch hood film
Bags
Bottles and tubes
Sheet
Healthcare applications
Extrusion coating
Lids, caps and closures
Wire & cable

High Density Polyethylene

LyondellBasell's high density polyethylene (HDPE) grades address numerous end-use requirements that at one time were only achievable by using metal, glass and fiber.

Benefits and Applications

HDPE is used in numerous customer applications:

Grocery merchandise and trash bags
Containers for frozen food and dairy products
Caps and closures
Liners for cereal, crackers and other food packaging
Plastic fuel tanks
Drink cups, dairy crates and bread trays
Toys and pails for items from paint to fresh produce

HDPE is also used to produce safety equipment, including hard hats; home insulation; bottles for milk, juice, household/industrial chemicals and motor oil; large (rotomolded) tanks for storage of agricultural and lawn care chemicals; and pressure pipe and sheet applications.

HDPE used in PE-X pipes

Over the past decades, HDPE products for hot water applications have been steadily replacing traditional materials such as copper. It all began some 40 years ago with Lupolen HDPE used in cross-linked pipe (PE-X).

Since that time, LyondellBasell has been one of the leading suppliers of materials used in the manufacture of hot water pipe made from cross-linked polyethylene (PE-X). Beginning with underfloor heating, continuing with sanitary pipe and moving into anti-free pipe applications, producers of PE-X pipe have been selecting Lupolen high density polyethylene for decades

Polybutene-1

LyondellBasell's polybutene-1 (PB-1) resins are high molecular weight polyolefins produced through the polymerization of the butene-1. Produced usind proprietary technology, PB-1 resins are used by LyondellBasell customers in the building, packaging, automotive and consumer industries. They offer truly unique building block and property modifier capabilities for the compounding industry.

Typical customer applications are:

Flexible pressure piping for domestic hot and cold drinking water*
Piping systems for surface heating and cooling*
District heating*
Radiator connections*
Easy-open flexible packaging
Low seal initiation temperature modification
Hot-melt adhesives
Polyolefin modifications
Water heaters
Extruder purging agent

*LyondellBasell does not sell PB-1 for piping applications in North America
