CELLWOOD Sustainable wood-replacement

CELLWOOD has been invented as a more environmentally friendly building material than pure wood. It is mostly used in form of sheets or profiles for outdoor deck floors, furniture, frames or railings.

On behalf of the Taiwanese company Microcell, the BIEGLO GmbH distributes European-wide the wood-like polymer CELLWOOD, which avoids all the disadvantages, which WPC materials still possess.

CELLWOOD is a 100% thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) with an integrated foaming system, which offers a closed microcell structure.

The sustainability derives from:

- Less use of natural wood
- Longer lifetime of the parts
- The recyclability, depending from the usage of the polymers and adhesives

- No need to post-color

This unique material leads to the following advantages versus WPC:

- A wood-like density of 0,6-0,7 gr/ccm
- No water permeability
- 100% recyclability of the CELLWOOD parts
- No fungal or mildew attack
- Anti-slippage characteristic in moisture surrounding

The BIEGLO GmbH offers Europe-wide high-performance polymers. The newest member in our family is the polyimide Meldin® 7000 from Saint –Gobain. Meldin® 7000 is a qualified series of high-temperature polymers, which fulfill the utmost demands of wear and dimensional stability by keeping its high stiffness and strength.

Meldin® enables to realize applications, which resist temperatures up to more than 400C for a short term and over 300C over a long term period – an endurability that has only been met by metals so far. Compared to metals, Meldin® has the great advantage of being much lighter, providing weight savings between 60 and 80%.

Meldin® 7000’s flammability is rated V-0, 5VA per UL-94 similar to Vespel® which is a brand name of durable high-performance polyimide-based plastics manufactured by DuPont.

CoPEEK – PTFE – Compound

Cost reduction due to wear resistant high performance polymers BIEGLO GmbH from Hamburg and perfluorence GmbH from Dresden agree on co-operation.

High performance polymers are used in area where strong mechanical loads and high temperatures are applied by self-lubricating applications. Costs can be reduced by minimizing wear and friction. The longer life cycle and an increased operational safety diminish material and process costs and help to decrease the energy consumption.

For the first time, an essential improvement of the tribological properties of CoPEEK-PTFE-compounds could be achieved through the co-operation of the companies perfluorence and BIEGLO. The matrix material CoPEEK is produced by the company Panjin Zhongrun High Performance Polymer Co. Ltd and distributed exclusively by BIEGLO GmbH in Europe. The new compound will be produced by perfluorence. BIEGLO will also take over the responsibility of distributing these new CoPEEK-PTFE-compounds, in Europe. The produced CoPEEK-PTFE-compounds will be introduced to the market for the first time at K-Messe 2013, hall 8B, booth E65.

perfluorence uses a newly developed and patented process of a chemical bonding of the two high performance polymers polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE).

Through the innovative processing of combining the CoPEEK with the specially modified PTFE a durable and permanently bonded new compound is generated. This results in a semi-crystalline thermoplastic compound with a homogenous and process stabilized morphology. The thermal and chemical resistance corresponds to the properties of the CoPEEK base material. In contrast to the state of the art technology (pure physical mixing of PEEK with PTFE) two critical points could be solved: (1) a homogenous spread of the PTFE within the matrix and (2) an outstanding incorporation of the PTFE particle in the PEEK matrix, in a way that no discharging and no rubbing-out of the PTFE takes place under the load of the components. The achievements are improved mechanical properties like impact resistance and elongation as well as tribological properties like wear- and friction-behaviour. The CoPEEK-PTFE-compound can be processed under the same conditions as the matrix-material for extrusion and injection moulding.

Advantages of this new compound can be deployed especially in applications like bearings, bushings, gliding parts and valve-seatings. Today´s operational boundaries of conventional materials are exceeded in a way that the life cycle of parts and assembly groups is considerably extended. The use of the new CoPEEK-PTFE-compound contributes to a longer working time by the reduction of wear and improvement of the gliding behavior and leads to a decrease of noise for moving and rubbing parts.

Another area of application, which can be developed successfully with this compound, is the manufacturing of monofilaments and fibers. There is proof that, by the chemical coupling of PTFE with CoPEEK, the PTFE could be distributed so accurately and homogenously (no agglomerates) that they had no negative influence to the spinning process. The previously known, physically mixed, compounds out of PTFE + PEEK are not appropriate for this application, due to their large PTFE-particles (agglomerates).

The subject of the innovation is a completely new generation of high performance polymers and lubricants. The scientists have succeeded in combining polymers or lubricants chemically in a way that a decomposition of the ingredients is nearly impossible. This enables the extension of contemporary technical solutions and the capturing of new application areas by minimizing maintenance costs.
