WellsDry – Desiccant

Overview

Desiccants, or as sometimes referred to moisture scavengers, are materials that will attract and chemically bind moisture. Desiccants can offer a simple and economical way to eliminate moisture problems in plastics processing that can otherwise cause unattractive surface defects such as lensing, voiding, and splash marks in the finished product.

Desiccant masterbatches can reduced the need for pre-drying of materials, allow processors to use recyclate with high moisture content and extend the control of processing moisture sensitive polymers.

Details

Wells Plastics desiccant masterbatches contain highly concentrated levels of a high purity, controlled particle size active ingredient. This will absorb and chemically lock in any moisture present in the system and prevent it from being released as steam during processing.

Typically 1wt% addition of a desiccant masterbatch will absorb in excess of 3000ppm moisture.

Wells Plastics desiccant masterbatches have proven to be highly effective in reducing fish eyes and voiding in recycled films such as bin bags and eliminating surface defects in high gloss ABS sheets containing recycled material.

Due to the carefully controlled particle size of the active ingredient, Wells Plastics desiccant masterbatches are suitable for use in thin films.

Compostable Compound

Overview

There is strong consumer demand for environmentally friendly disposable packaging materials. Compostable materials meet this requirement in many ways. A compostable material will break down completely by biological processes in a time frame consistent with natural materials such as food waste, without leaving any toxic or environmentally damaging residues.

Details

Wells Plastics have developed WellsBio compostable compounds for film extrusion. The WellsBio range has been specifically designed to provide the user with ease of processing and finished films with balanced physical strength properties. WellsBio compounds are typically used in caddy liner applications.

WellsBio compostable compounds will produce bags that are compostable and fully biodegradable. Furthermore these materials have been tested and certified by DIN CERTCO as meeting the requirements of DIN EN 13423:2000-12 and by VINCOTTE as “OK to Compost”.

WellsBio compostable materials are supplied in compound form, and to meet the requirements of EN13432 must be used in pure form and not diluted with other materials.

Oxo-biodegradables – Reverte

Overview

Wells Plastics is the developer, owner and manufacturer of Reverte oxo-biodegradable technology and trademarks. Reverte additives are well suited to a wide range of processes and applications, and they have been used for many years to provide reliable and reproducible oxo-biodegradable products around the world. Reverte is recognised as technically superior and the numerous formulations available offer a greater degree of control and predictability than competitor additives.

Details

The term ‘Oxo-biodegradable’ is a hybridisation of two words, oxidation and biodegradable. It clearly defines a two step process initiated by the Reverte additive to degrade the polymer chain (break up) and make it available for biodegradability within the environment when a treated item has finished its useful life.

Reverte is designed specifically to address the issue of plastic waste that gets into the environment and cannot be realistically collected. Reverte has been used in numerous PE and PP applications for many years and now, as a further advance in oxo-biodegradable technology, Wells Plastics is offering a new grade of Reverte for PET film. Since most of flexible plastic packaging has a layer of PET or MET PET film, this new development is expected to revolutionise the fight against flexible plastic packaging litter around the world.

Recently, Wells has completed testing of multilayer laminates made of PET, BOPP, MET PET, MET BOPP, PE films incorporation Reverte in all the layers.
