Density separation in the gravity field

Precise sorting for greater purity

The key factor in the economic success of a recycling operation is the purity level of the plastic material. And standards of purity will only continue to increase in the future. In practice, plastic waste is usually mixed. For example:

Heavy PET drink bottles are mixed with lightweight HDPE and PP caps
PVC must be separated from high-value HDPE and/or PP
Foreign objects such as stones, glass shards or cast iron metal must be separated from lightweight PP and HDPE

 

Most separation tanks available on the market are poorly designed and constructed, using strong water currents that can interfere with density separation in the gravity field. Air bubbles that gather on the surface of the plastic material can also keep heavy particles afloat. Sorting plastics in this way is often ineffective and can lead to poor results.

Pla.to provides a solution for achieving density separation in a static gravity field that implements specially designed stirrers and mixers to prevent interference from air bubbles.

Zig-Zag Aspirator – easy to implement, dust-free results

One of the key phases in plastics recycling involves the separation of thin film from thicker shredded material. The most common example is the removal of labels from PET bottles. The thick PET flakes need to be collected, while the labels need to go.

The Zig-Zag Aspirator uses an air flow to suck up the lightweight labels. The heavier plastic pieces fall to the bottom. The separation of materials could not be easier.

Another advantage is that the shredded material is dust free, which is a huge gain in further processing.

Highest energy efficiencies for thermal drying

Cleaned plastic needs to be dried completely before further processing – even a small amount of moisture can stress the degassing systems. Thick-walled plastics are easy to dry. But thin film, with its extremely large surface area, presents a considerable challenge.

Pla.to Thermal Dryers achieve outstanding drying results by applying hot air to the wet plastic in a highly intensive process. The machine surfaces are thermally insulated to minimise heat losses.

The heat is generated through either

Gas or oil
Electric energy
Waste heat from technical processes such as diesel conversion

 

A heat exchanger is used to prevent the combustion gases from coming into contact with the plastic. This so-called indirect hot air generation provides optimal security against accidental fires.

Pla.to High-Spin Dryer

Combined technologies for one-step mechanical drying and cleaning

The mechanical drying of film is a big challenge for many recycling operations. Over the years, thinner films have been produced, and the surface area to be dried has increased accordingly.

High peripheral speeds are needed to spin water from these surfaces. The extra-long Pla.to rotor optimises drying efficiency by allowing the film particles to remain inside the dryer for an especially long time.

The machine also has an integrated fan in a wear-resistant design that generates a powerful air flow. The fan sucks the film through the machine while also taking up the evaporating water.

At the same time, residual debris is removed from the surfaces through friction. The cleaning system automatically removes dirt particles together with the spun off water from the dryer.

Our friction and high-intensity washers are the ideal combination for removing contaminations such as food residues, paper labels and soil on agricultural film.

The first cleaning phase for the plastic waste begins with the Friction Washer, which uses a large volume of circulating water in a constant cycle. This gives the contaminations a good soaking and makes it easier to remove during the second cleaning phase.

The high-intensity washer then gives the pre-washed plastics a thorough, final cleaning. The contaminations are removed by means of powerful friction between the screen basket and the rotors in the centrifuge. The force applied by the cleaning system is strong enough to remove even difficult dirt. No additional water is required during this phase and the plastic is dewatered alongside the cleaning process.
