PLANTIC™ biopolymers. From nature, for our future

Kuraray acquired Plantic Technologies Ltd. of Australia in 2015.  EVAL™ EVOH is used to provide food packaging with barrier properties, reducing environmental impact through versatile optimised structure design. PLANTIC™ is itself composed of up to 80% renewable materials, and used primarily for high barrier trays and skin packs. This ready-to-use structure offers a direct reduction in the food packaging material's environmental footprint.

Not just another biopolymer
PLANTIC™ has achieved a unique place in the world market for biopolymers through proprietary technology that delivers biodegradable and renewable sourced alternatives to conventional plastics based on special varieties of corn (maize).  Sources are not GMO, and do not compete with food sources.

Unlike other bioplastics companies who utilise organic materials but whose polymers are still developed in refineries, PLANTIC™'s polymer as well as its raw material, are grown in a field. The entire process integrates in a completely new way the science of organic innovation with commercial and industrial productivity. The result is both a broad range of immediate performance and cost advantages, and long-term environmental and sustainability benefits.

PLANTIC™ HP is a fully biodegradable high barrier biopolymer that forms the core of all PLANTIC™ products.  Rolls of PLANTIC™ HP sheet can be thermoformed to make trays, used notably for packaging chocolates.  After use, these trays can be composted industrially or at home; in fact, the PLANTIC™ HP biopolymer dissolves when immersed in water.

Putting biopolymers to work
For food packaging, the core layer of PLANTIC™ HP obviously requires some protection from moisture. Depending on the customer needs, outer skins and sealing layers of conventional PET and PE can be added, protecting the PLANTIC™ HP core.  Thus shielded, the PLANTIC™ HP takes on an entirely new role: high gas barrier layer.

The resulting structure provides outstanding gas barrier properties, notably for thermoformed MAP trays.  These barrier properties seal the MAP gas mixture inside the package, maintaining the optimal MAP gas mixture, and thus extend the shelf life of the packaged food.  The effective barrier properties for the entire package are provided by the PLANTIC™HP core, which typically composes up to 80% of the total materials used.

Different ready-to-use grades of PLANTIC™ sheet have been created by combining different skin layers with the PLANTIC™ HP core:

PLANTIC™ E, PLANTIC™ R, PLANTIC™ RE, PLANTIC™ ES and  PLANTIC™ EF represent the company’s flagship products for rigid and flexible packaging on traditional thermoforming equipment.  All of these products are a direct replacement for conventional polymers.  When compared with oil based products an independent assessment found that PLANTIC™ requires up to 40% less energy and provides a reduction in greenhouse gases by up to 70%.

PLANTIC™ R a fully recyclable high barrier product is being used extensively for red meat applications. PLANTIC™ R seals to most traditional PET based top webs. This rigid product runs on all traditional thermoforming equipment  and gives the producer the opportunity to down gauge even while achieving a higher barrier performance and stronger pack presentation.

PLANTIC™ is supplying major supermarket customers on three continents for MAP  applications such as fresh case ready beef, pork, lamb and veal, smoked and processed meats, chicken, fresh pasta  and cheese applications.  Food waste is successfully limited by maintaining the MAP gas mixture, extending shelf life. 

Now being developed is a new range of more flexible materials with the same environmental and performance characteristics as rigid based structures. These flexible options are already proving already to be a preferred choice for many consumers, retailers and processors.  Included is PLANTIC™ for easy peel skin pack, available in a wide variety of colours and textures, with the ability to seal to PET and PE top webs.

Although they are not EVAL™ EVOH products, PLANTIC™ is commercialised by Kuraray's EVAL Division, including the EVAL Europe N.V. site in Antwerp, Belgium.

KURARISTER™ retortable transparent high barrier films

KURARISTER™ retortable transparent high barrier films

KURARISTER™ is a retortable high barrier and transparent film made exclusively by Kuraray Co. Ltd. of Japan. Used notably for stand-up pouches or lid film, its high performance offers a clear alternative to aluminium.

Thanks to its polymeric barrier coating, KURARISTER has excellent flex-crack and pinhole resistance, and is compatible with metal detectors. The barrier coating can be easily reverse printed with eye-catching graphics, with no effect on the barrier properties.

KURARISTER™ CF is a 12µm polyester film, coated with a special barrier layer developed by Kuraray. The thin but extremely durable coating layer displays gas-barrier properties that are significantly better than standard PET film before and after retort. Using the latest cutting-edge KURARISTER™ technology, CF also provides excellent water vapour barrier performance.

KURARISTER™ C is also based on a 12µm polyester film, coated with a special barrier layer developed by Kuraray. Gas barrier performance is significantly better than standard PET film before and after retort, but with similar water vapour barrier performance.

KURARISTER™ N is a 15µm oriented polyamide (OPA) film, coated with a special barrier layer developed by Kuraray. The thin but extremely durable coating layer has gas barrier properties that are significantly better than standard OPA film before and after retort. Using KURARISTER™ N's OPA-like mechanical strength, it is possible to make two-ply stand-up pouch structures, saving costs. The resulting easy-to-print high barrier pouch keeps its transparency and barrier properties even after high-temperature sterilisation.

Though not an EVOH barrier product, KURARISTER™ is promoted in Europe/Middle East/Africa and the Americas by the EVAL™ EVOH Business Unit.

EVAL™ EVOH high barrier resins and films

EVAL™, the world’s leading EVOH
Imagine a plastic wall that is 10 metres thick. Not very much is going to get through a barrier like that. Now imagine that the same protective function can be realised with only 1 mm. With EVAL™ EVOH it can. Normally an EVAL™ layer of just a few microns is enough to provide an amazingly effective gas and aroma barrier, to protect the quality of packaged goods. Like food or cosmetics or vitamins. Even the fuel in a car.

EVAL™'s barrier properties give more performance per thickness than any conventional polymer, and the barrier function works in both directions.

Protecting quality and value
EVAL™ adds real function to packaging by keeping oxygen and MOSH/MOAH out and locking flavour and atmosphere in where they belong. This protects quality and value, prolongs shelf life without artificial additives and reduces waste, often while reducing the total amount of packaging. This allows for innovative plastic structure designs that are both reliable and safe in use, usually reducing environmental impact and generating savings throughout the product life cycle.

Reduced emissions
When used in barrier structures for construction, agricultural and automotive fuel system applications, EVAL™ helps create light-weight structures that help protect the environment from gas, fuel or chemical emissions.

Recyclable and recoverable
EVAL™ EVOH is recyclable, and is commonly used as part of a regrind structural layer in rigid packaging and automotive applications. It can also be used for post-consumer recycling, and will not disrupt polyolefin recycling streams. A very high proportion of energy is recoverable from EVOH, often reducing the amount of extra fuel necessary for thermal disposal of sorted waste. EVAL™ does not contain chlorine or metals that can later be released into the environment.

Kuraray

Genestar™ PA9T Heat-resistant polyamide resin

Genestar™ is a PA9T with unique mix of useful physical properties, notably:

- heat resistance
- low water absorption
- chemical resistance 

 It is used in a wide range of electronic and automotive applications that must function under difficult conditions.


Automotive 


Development initially targeted metal replacement in order to reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency. First applications included small gears and various fuel system parts. Today Genestar™ can be found in a wide variety of pieces located throughout the vehicle, but especially in the technically demanding areas near the engine.

As automobiles themselves become more sophisticated, demand for Genestar™ is increasing for automotive electronic components. This is expected to expand further along with the increased production of hybrid and electric cars.


Personal electronics and LED reflectors
Since its launch in 1999, Genestar™ has been used for connector applications in mobile phones and personal computers. New grades of Genestar™ provide improved durability (heat and light resistance) for LED reflectors, used both in hand-held devices and televisions.

Ltd.  As a complement to EVAL™, KURARISTER™ can be easily reverse printed and laminated to sealing layers in order to make transparant and retortable high barrier stand-up pouches and other food packaging. Since it uses a polymeric barrier coating, KURARISTER™ withstands flexing, folding and stretching during processing and distribution. KURARISTER retains its excellent barrier properties and transparency even after retort treatment.

GENESTAR™ is a proprietary PA9T polyamide resin developed by Kuraray Co. Ltd.  This synthetic resin is highly resistant to heat, water, and abrasion, yet easily moulded. GENESTAR is widely used in connectors for electronic and electrical devices such as personal computers, digital cameras, and mobile telephones. Its use for technical automotive parts is also increasing rapidly.
