Cavity Pressure Sensors

PRIAMUS cavity pressure sensors are based on the piezoelectric measuring principle. On this account they are particularly suitable for the use in the injection molding process, because due to the cyclic application a defined operate and reset status is assured.

There is never only a single issue with injcetion molding. Therefore there is never only one solution.
FILLCONTROL consists of different system components which are - depending on the application - used for documenting, monitoring and controlling of the injection molding process depending on the application.
This is always based on real process data measured in the mold. Because good parts are not made with the machine, but only inside the mold. The moment that the melt front passes over a sensor, it is automatically detected by the system. With this information we can determine material viscosity, open and close valve gates, and sequentially control the mold so that flash is prevented.

Melt Temperature Sensor

The injection molding process is a thermodynamic process in which the plastics pass different aggregate states. The quality of the manufactured molded parts depends primarily on the pressure and temperature conditions. The temperature of the material in the different stage of molding will determine the quality of the part that is produced.
Melt temperature sensors are used in areas where the plastic melt does not solidify, but permanently stays in a viscous condition. For this reason the melt temperature can be described as a material parameter while the cavity temperature represents a real process parameter. Melt temperatures are therefore suitable to be used as reference values for viscosities determined by PRIAMUS systems in the mold or in general for the evaluation and monitoring of material properties during the injection molding process.
Cavity temperature sensors however are applied directly in the cavity of an injection mold and usually touch the solidifying plastic melt as soon as it reaches the sensor position. This way both, the mold surface temperature of the cavity wall as well as the temperature change upon arrival of the melt at the sensor can be determined. The automatic detection of the melt front allows a number of control methods, such as the automatic switchover to holding pressure or the automatic balancing of multi cavity molds.
The melt temperature measurement with type 4050A is based on a measurement at the bore hole wall of the melt channel. It can therefore be applied universally and independently from the diameter of the nozzle or the hot runner manifold and is always related to the same reference point. Alternative methods measured inside of the melt are not universally applicable due to the different diameters of the melt channels and because the exact measuring point inside of the melt is not exactly defined. Furthermore the melt flow might be disrupted by using intrusive sensors which can lead to significant measuring errors and also to degraded material.
The melt temperature sensor has been designed for the measurement of melt temperatures in machine nozzles and hotrunner manifolds. Due to its robust and industrial design it is suitable for almost all applications in this area. The hardened sensor front allows the sensor to be used for filled and abrasive plastic melts and guarantees a longer sensor life. The special seal ensures that no leakage occurs even with high pressures as they are common in the nozzle and in the manifold.

PRIAMUS cavity temperature sensors are specifically optimized thermocouples of type N (NiCr-Ni). This thermocouple was chosen, because it shows compared to other thermocouples precise advantages (no corrosion, no irreversible temperature shiftings). Just as with cavity pressure it is preferable to use signal lines with safe ground connection and connecting plugs are used.

Quality of ThingsTM – Quality 4.0 - Quality Management and Traceability up to the Minute

The terms „Industry 4.0“ and „Internet of Things“ describe generally the networking of industrial production by means of the internet. State of the art production plants today are reliant to know their manufacturing processes and to check their key figures by the push of a button. The main purpose is to increase cost and time efficiency.
In injection molding, however, there is one additional component which is absolutely crucial: the quality of the molded parts.

Due to this reason PRIAMUS has especially concentrated on the communication of quality data. From this the term “Quality of ThingsTM” has been created. Hereby all quality relevant data are being transmitted via network to an MES system. The basis is the communication protocol OPC-UA which is used to communicate all data related to quality, machine, mold, controller or peripherals.

These data are finally being collected by the PRIAMUS FILLCONTROL system and provided via the OPC-UA interface.

The global MES specialist T.I.G. is a leading supplier of manufacturing execution systems which allow the analysis of these data in a professional way. The “authentig” system of T.I.G. collects these quality data via OPC-UA and integrates them into their own planning and analysis modules. Reduced production cost, an optimized reduction of resources and a guaranteed quality are the results.

Both systems together are presented at K´2016 on the PRIAMUS booth A19 in hall 10.

Mobile FILLCONTROL Monitoring System - Professional Quality Management in One Set

FILLCONTROL Monitor was especially developed for process monitoring in injection molding and provides a number of unique functions which guarantee the quality of molded parts.
The system for instance identifies on the basis of cavity pressure whether the parts are completely filled or not. Additional conditions such as fluctuations in flow and viscosity in the process for example are automatically detected and monitored by means of cavity pressure and cavity temperature sensors.

Furthermore, the system automatically detects the melt front in the cavity and can therefore be used for switching purposes or for automatic switchover to holding pressure. This is particularly relevant because the viscosity permanently changes independent from the machine settings.
The quality dependent quality parameters are provided as warning, action and alarm limits.
The quality of the injection molded parts is completely documented. The user interface can be switched to different languages by the push of a button.

While the system in general is permanently installed on the molding machine type 7090A-xpxT is now also offered as a mobile version for service, tests and laboratory applications.
All required components such as cables, amplifiers and Core are safely stowed in a transport case.

PRIAMUS HoT Box - Balance made for Production

Just on time for K´2016 PRIAMUS® provides a special offer for the balancing of multi cavity hot runner molds. Main component is the control system FILLCONTROL Control H which balances Multi Cavity Hot Runner Molds and which controls the melt flow in large molded parts fully automatic.

With this very effective and meanwhile widely spread procedure the settings of the hot runner nozzles are permanently adjusted depending on the actual melt flow in the cavity. In doing so unfilled parts in multi cavity molds are excluded and weld lines in large components are actively controlled, relocated and kept in position. This procedure is a precondition for the systematic reduction of cycle times in multi cavity molds.

HoT Box contains all components including Core, connecting cables, interfaces and BlueLine amplifiers for maximum 16 temperature and 4 pressure channels. With this setup all applications up to 16 cavities can be monitored and controlled.

The entire package is available for a period of 3 months – starting from October until December 2016. The savings compared to list price are more than 30 %.

BlueLine Core - The Next Generation

The BlueLine Core is a powerful control unit for the monitoring and control of the injection molding process. The unit provides all interfaces which are required for the operation of PRIAMUS© electronic devices by using the latest connection technology.

With the introduction of the new generation of type 8280C a device with significantly higher performance is available which was optimized in a number of areas.
The VARAN manager, for instance, which digitalizes the measuring signals has been completely revised and optimized in order to process essential higher data volumes.
The control unit itself has been equipped with a Quad core of the latest generation and the maximum RAM size has been doubled.

For the storing of the measuring data a SATA-SSD hard disk drive is used which allows faster access, as well as a significantly higher robustness in the industrial field. The device includes a 15 “ touch screen, as well as a robust fanless housing which allows it to be used in clean rooms.

The BlueLine Core provides a number of standard interfaces, as well as 3 additional Ethernet interfaces. The first Ethernet interface is used to transmit large data volumes of the PRIAMUS® data acquisition which forms its own data network. The second and third Ethernet interface is used to connect to a standard internet or intranet network. The advantages of this concept are that data transmission to the internet or intranet is not affected by large data volumes of the measuring signals. At the same time the network for data transmission is not affected by fluctuations in the company network.

FILLCONTROL Control V - Automatic Valve Gate Control for Hot and Cold Runners

Meanwhile, the balancing of hot runner molds by means of cavity temperature sensors is an accepted and widely used procedure in injection molding. Hereby, the melt flow in the individual cavities of a multi cavity mold is determined, and then adapted and optimized via the corresponding nozzle temperatures.

Entirely new possibilities in the field of process control are opened up by the ability to position and control the pins in the corresponding valve gates directly as a function of melt flow. In this way, multi cavity molds can be balanced without having to change the nozzle temperatures of hot runners. Using this principle, hot runner systems for thermoplastic materials can be balanced just as well as cold runner systems for the injection molding of liquid silicone.

The automatic detection of the melt front in every cavity enables the different filling times from cavity to cavity to be recognized and analyzed automatically. The PRIAMUS® System calculates the optimized settings of the pin stroke for every cycle, and transmits them to the valve controller via an interface. In this way, the filling times in every cavity are automatically matched and balanced to each other adaptively.

The precondition for the automatic valve gate control is the connection of the system via an interface. For the balancing of thermoplastic multi cavity molds e.g. valve gate controls of Synventive are suitable while for applications in LSR molding the Servo Shot system of ACH Hefner has been used successfully.
