Under the technology brand ePD™, Oerlikon Balzers develops integrated services, equipment and solutions for the metallisation of plastic parts.

ePD™ is the short form for embedded PVD and signifies an environment-friendly and future-oriented coating procedure. Whenever high-end metallic surfaces on plastic parts are requested - ePD™ is the more environmentally friendly alternative compared to out of date metallization techniques. No harmful agents such as chromium III and chromium VI or other heavy metals are used in the process. As such the technology is especially renowned for its environmental neutrality and its extended functionalities in a variety of industries among them the automotive industry, the furniture industry and even the sanitary industry.

BALINIT DYLYN: Ideal wear protection and reduction of coefficient of friction for plastics processing

Outstanding corrosion protection and anti-adhesion properties, have made BALINIT® DYLYN a well-established coating. Its wear protection and friction properties are especially important for mechanical engineering, plastics processing and the semiconductor industry.

 
During the process of Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition (PACVD), chemical reaction is caused by plasma excitation and ionization. Optimum quality and performance is ensured by coating in a clean environment under vacuum conditions, and by correct handling of parts and components, a critical task, in which we are highly experienced.

BALINIT® DYLYN is also used for cavities and moulding applications in the medical industry and packaging industries (especially for screw cap and PET bottle manufacturing), as well as for all of the moving and sliding parts of injection moulding tools.

BALITHERM PRIMEFORM: Für hocheffiziente Spritzguss-Formen mit brillanter Oberfläche

Hochglanzpolierte Oberflächen von Kunststoff-Spritzgussformen sind sehr empfindlich. Für besseres Entformungsverhalten, optimierte Verarbeitbarkeit und gesteigerte Bauteil-Qualität ist BALITHERM® PRIMEFORM die richtige Behandlung. Mit ihr werden stark beanspruchte Flächen verschleißbeständig und vor Kratzern, Umwelteinflüssen und unsachgemäßer Bedienung geschützt.

Das PRIMEFORM Diffusionsverfahren optimiert die Oberfläche von Spritzgussformen und steigert dadurch deren Härte bis zu 1400 HV. Dadurch werden diese wesentlich widerstandsfähiger und zudem Aufbaubildung, Abplatzungen und eine Versprödung an Kanten reduziert.

Auch Reparaturen oder Nachpolieren bedarf keinem langwierigen Entschichten und Nachbehandeln, wie das bei anderen Behandlungsmethoden der Fall ist, wodurch Wartungsaufwände und Stillstandzeiten deutlich reduziert werden.

Damit ist PRIMEFORM die ideale Behandlung für Spritzgussformen für Kunststoffteile in  der Automobilindustrie, der Möbel- und Verpackungsindustrie sowie für die Medizintechnik.

The integrated system, completely developed by Oerlikon Balzers, enables high-volume mass production in accordance with automotive specifications. Full machine control: Process parameters and recipes are provided by Oerlikon Balzers, and can be saved and reproduced automatically at any time. Remote service can access the equipment controls and exchange and upload parameters. History profiles can be run and process events are recorded and can be retrieved at any time.

What is ePD™?

Under the technology brand ePD™, Oerlikon Balzers develops integrated services, equipment and solutions for the chrome looking metallisation of plastic parts.

ePD™ is the short form for “embedded PVD for Design parts” and signifies an environment-friendly and future-oriented coating procedure. Whenever high-end metallic surfaces on plastic parts are requested - ePD™ is the clean alternative compared to today’s electro plating technologies. No harmful chemicals such as Cr6+ are used in the process. The ePD™ process is environmentally friendly due to low energy consumption and the avoidance of special waste. ePD™ coated parts are fully recyclable.

The new process is described as “embedded PVD for Design parts”, since the metallisation effect is sandwiched between two layers of UV lacquer. The first layer is the primer, or base coat, which serves to equalise irregularities on the surface of the injection-moulded plastic substrate. On top of this comes the actual inline PVD, which uses magnetron sputtering in a vacuum chamber for an exceptionally stable coating with high microstructure density-with no harmful ions left behind. To protect the metallized coating, a final UV coating (top coat) is applied which is extremely durable, stable and, fast-drying.
