Burn Off Ovens

Longworth’s burn-off oven system is an integral part of our component cleaning service.

For years we’ve developed and refined our processes to meet our exacting requirements and those of our clients. The huge advances we’ve made in the control and operator interface aspects of burn-off oven technology is evident in the extensive range of ovens we design, build and install for customers on an international basis.

Although our standard selection includes several models in various sizes – on the rare occasions that our selection doesn’t offer something to suit your requirements, we will design an oven to address your specific needs.

How does a burn-oven work?
The fundamental process or a burn-off oven is known as pyrolysis. This is a combination of thermal and chemical decomposition of organic material in the absence of oxygen. Pyrolysis is one of the most effective available methods of removing plastic or paint coatings from a wide range of metal components. The process involves heating a contaminated item in a ceramic lined oven (generally referred to in industry as a burn-off oven) at a precisely controlled temperature with a low oxygen environment. This will cause the vaporisation of any volatile constituents present and the thermo-chemical decomposition of the organic material. Resulting vapours and fumes are heated further in a separate afterburner chamber and converted into water vapour and harmless gases that can be legally and safely discharged to atmosphere.

Our Ovens
Our burn off ovens are constructed to exacting standards to suit the particular requirements of individual clients. To achieve the precise control our customers expect, each oven features a number of distinct burn-off or pyrolysis temperature profile settings. These profiles can be used to gradually breakdown the contamination whilst preventing the overheating of the component being processed. Typical uses of our ovens include the removal of polymers from extrusion equipment, the removal of coatings from jigs and fixtures and the removal of grease, residues and old coatings from food production equipment. The key motivation is always to allow reuse of the equipment instead of replacement. The robust design and construction of the units means they offer years of reliable performance even in the harshest industrial situations. Burn-off oven interiors can also be lined in stainless steel to avoid damage to internal insulation sustained via everyday knocks and scrapes.
