ASS Robot Hand Kit - Gripper components of Highest Quality and Precision

We developed a state-of-the art kit of components that fit together like an erector set. It gives you sheer unlimited possibilities to build your own custom robotic tooling with ease. The kit includes advanced components that enable you to build Robotic Tooling even for complex material handling applications. The ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) consists of 1,500 gripper components, such as grippers, vacuum cups, profiles and special gripper components.

According to your specifications we design Robotic Tooling from our array of grippers, vacuum cups and aluminum profiles. We can also integrate them into your existing automation. We offer our components in different sizes to accommodate an ideal fit for your part size. All components fit together like an erector set. Most parts are in stock and ready to ship the same day.

Custom Design and Special Solutions

We combine custom-made components with our standard components. Our standard gripper components can be combined with:

Individual components made of polyamide (for example contours), lightweight components made of carbon such as carbon tube systems or coated gripping elements integrated (for example with EP-coating, PTFE or Flock).

Many special solutions for gripper parts have been included as a standard gripper parts in our catalogue in the course of time and expand the product range for our customers.

3D-Printing / ASS PA-Forming (Selective Laser Sintering Process)

Individual Lightweight Constructions and Absolute Flexibility

In production often smallest components with very small geometries are needed. Automation technology often reaches its limits. By ASS PA-Forming (selective laser sintering process) we are successful where conventional gripper systems are reaching their limits.
PA-Forming means that the plastic polyamide powder is melted by a laser. The selectively melted plastic mass is built up in layers according to the specifications of the digital construction data.

The selective laser sintering process creates previously unimagined freedoms for the development of new components. Compact size, low weight, and integrated functions are advantages. Very small nest pitches and the handling of thin-walled, unstable parts are possible. In addition to the weight advantage, moving elements can be integrated directly into the components. 3D contours can have integrated air ducts or gripping functions and movable elements such as bellow structures.

Polyamide gripper parts can be combined individually with the components of our our ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT). With ASS PA-Forming we open up new avenues in automation technology.

Exact Production Data

These grippers are made by selective laser sintering. Basis for production are the CAD data. The data can also be edited during construction when needed. Production duration of generative manufactured grippers depends on various parameters such as thickness, laser speed, and of course size of the gripper.

Another advantage of the process is economic production through time and cost savings. The customer can promptly be provided a high-quality solution because the grippers are constructed without tools. The complexity of the actual part has no effect on the production costs.

FRP Handling

Efficient production of lightweight components for series production

The use of lightweight components such as fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), and especially carbon fiber reinforced plastic parts (CFRP) are growing in importance in the automotive industry:

Lightweight components in vehicles reduce energy demand through massive savings in weight and increase safety through better stiffness and damping of FRP products. In addition, the materials are resistant to corrosion.

Fiber-reinforced plastics in addition to carbon fiber reinforced plastic parts (CFRP) include glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP).

Challenges to handling limp organo-sheets

A particular challenge is the reliable handling of limp organo-sheets. While the cold, untreated organo-sheets and the fully formed and cooled down parts can be treated conventionally, heated organo-sheets have to be handled more specifically.

While heating the material it must be ensured that the composite sheet does not sag, that it stays in its defined position and that it is accurately deformed.

ASS Maschinenbau has numerous tailored solutions in the field for handling ultra-lightweight components made of thermoplastic carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials in the field. The original ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) offers, for example, a variety of different needle grippers for handling limp and flexible materials.

To ensure best grip also vacuum cups are included in the automation system solutions. ASS offers specially developed vacuum cups that can withstand the high temperatures and leave no or only minor marks on the material.
The process will be adjusted individually for accurate positioning as needed. For this purpose, ASS offers for example docking fingers, centering fingers, grippers, and gripper fingers, stacking guides, and/or various sensors.

For maintenance and optimization of your automation system we provide our professionals also available on-site. Assembling

Our assembling service provides construction of grippers and end-of-arm-tooling. By mounting at the facility, the quality is increased and allows fast response times between customer and ASS. The direct contact from our assembling department to the other departments allows fast response time.

Programming

As service we offer the configuration and programming for switches and electronic devices or systems. The configuration and programmin is done by our experts. Programming for control and robotic systems can be made at ASS or in the customers facility.

Quality Control

If required, we integrate vision systems with the latest optics and camera technology. For example, we integrate an image processing and quality control system in the production process.

Training

We offer training for our customers. This may include programming to your needs of end-of-arm-tooling, assembling grippers, system programming and SPS programming. The training can be done directly on the machine or at ASS.

The quality certificate "Safe with Chemistry" of hebro Chemie GmbH audits professional and safe handling of chemical resources. Off course ASS also is certified according to DIN ISO 2008 and audited for renewable energy.

Higher Quality - Same Price

ASS provides stability and reliability even in prices. Despite rising raw material and energy prices and higher supplier prices gripper components of the ASS Robot-Hand-Kit (EOAT) also have stable prices in 2016.

Through optimized manufacturing processes, the additional costs could be counteracted again. "Even though rising raw material and supplier prices" comments Managing Director Reinhold Ziewers "ASS again was able to compensate price increases by manufacturing processes, which are in the continuous process constantly improving."

Manufacturing and Assembling by Qualified Personnel

A large part for stable prices belong to the infrastructure of the building and staff planning:
Modern manufacturing centers in combination with traditional cutting machines enable optimal planning and utilization for the production of standard gripper parts and customized special elements.
A significant impact on the utilization has resources planning: Our trained professionals master up to three working shifts if necessary. Currently about 100 employees are at ASS in Overath, each contributing in its field to increase the quality of gripper components, robot hands and automation systems.

For large-scale projects in the plastics and automotive industries, the hall has a flexible area of approximately 500 square meters. Here individual robots, production cells or entire production lines can be built, tested or put into operation for projects.

Quality Management and Quality Assurance - Made in Germany

A part of quality assurance is that all ASS gripper components developed, designed and produced Overath. All concerned elements are delivered with the highest quality standards according to the EC Machinery Directive, have a declaration of incorporation or a declaration of conformity.

To meet the high demands of the plastics industry quality management of ASS has been certified again successfully according to DIN ISO 9001. ASS slso audited quality certificates "Renewable Energy", which certifies that renewable energy sources are used and the quality certificate "Safe with chemistry", it certifies a professional and safe handling of the chemical resources used.

De-gating of spures made easy

Nippers and their Applications - De-Gating, Cutting, Pinching

In the plastics industry, one of the first steps after the plastic part is extracted from the injection moulding machine is the separation of sprues. Most plastic products from the injection moulding machine have sprues, (electroplating) tabs, overflows or ridges.

In further production process the sprues are usually removed. For de-gate various options are available. For example, sharp knives, heated wires or blades, laser technology or mechanical solutions such as a separating drum. Much of these cutting tasts is done by sprue-nippers:

ASS Maschinenbau GmbH offers to a wide range of nipper bodies and nipper blades in order to solve the different tasks. In particular in the automotive plastic injection moulding have high quality standards. To meet these standards, the parties always develop new de-gating solutions.

Nippers and nipper blades for various cutting tasks

The original ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) offers more than 30 sprue nippers and approximately 70 different cutting inserts, so called nipper blades for almost unlimited applications.

The nippers are in different versions available: automatically or manually operating, single or double acting, force amplified, round, square or regular. The strongest nipper has a maximum of power: cutting force of 7,700 N at 0.6 MPa. For light cutting tasks there is a model with 150N available. The achievable actual cutting force is always dependent on the used nipper blades and the air pressure.

The nipper blades are available in a variety of geometries: straight versions SEG (nipper blade straight), SEK inserts for pinching, as well as various SES standard inserts with angular positions of 15° to 40°, 90° angled inserts SEW and Z-shaped nipper blades SEZ.

To cover the different tasks of application in plastic injection moulding optimally the nipper blades have steel alloy or carbide insert and various cutting lengths of ten to 50 millimeters. If necessary, also customized special nipper blades may be manufactured and used.

By default the cutting inserts come with a spring return. For over two years ASS offers selected nipper blades with magnetic resetting, they can replace one-on-one the ones with spring return.

The cutting inserts with magnetic resetting are nearly maintenance-free of springs superfluous and significantly increases the safety of the robot gripper. For best cutting-success the nipper blades are made of forged steel.
Various components, such as on sprue nippers optimized strokes, sprue holders, fixings or adjustable mountings for grippers extend the capabilities of the nippers.

Life optimization - Sensor option – Protection

A frequently asked request to the nipper blades is the query option of gripper position: the sprue was separated cleanly and did the nipper blades open or do they stick together. If the blades are stucked together it is a serious risk that the tool and the robot hand can be damaged. An easy sensoring of the piston position is not enough to check this.

ASS has developed a solution: As a novelty ASS presented a query option for nippers (ASN SH). This new gripper components allows to proof the closed and/or open position of selected nipper blades directly. This new development increases the process safety in the injection moulding machine, because now is immediately recognizable when the blades have not reopened. In particular, the use of single-acting nippers can be significantly increased level of security.

Also new in the scope of delivery of the ASS Robot Hand Kit (EOAT) are nipper blade protectors SK. These caps are made of polyamide and offer a cost-effective protection for nipper blades and staff, for example, when changing the robot hands or maintenance. The caps come in red colour.

Individual consultation - Optimal cooperation

In practice, the selection of suitable nipper blades and the use is dependent on the geometry of the component and must be selected individually. A universal solution is rarely implemented by the many influencing factors.

100 Years Anniversary of VESSEL Tools

ASS Maschinenbau gave Honorific Speech at Eisenwarenmesse in Cologne

At March 6th VESSEL Tools from Japan celebrated its 100th anniversary at Eisenwarenmesse - International Hardware Fair in Cologne. During the Celebration Mr. Reinhold Ziewers, CEO of ASS Maschinenbau GmbH in Overath, gave the honorific speech.

Pioneer of Japanese Tool Manufacturing

A 100 years ago VESSEL started manufacturing farming tools and screwdrivers. The product range was expanded continuously. During the 1960´s pneumatic tools and nippers were added.
Today Mr. Junichi Taguchi is leading VESSEL Tool as president and CEO in third generation of Taguchi family. He always follows his family’s credo that VESSEL products have to satisfy highest quality standards and are only allowed to be shipped when these standards are fulfilled.
