Testing Laboratory

Impacts head office and UKAS 17025 accredited laboratory are based at Grangemouth, which has the UK’s main processing, refining and petrochemicals centre for North Sea Oil & Gas operations. Many of its team have over 30 years experience and know-how and all of its experts are highly qualified both technically and commercially.

Impact’s customers range from the largest international brands , plastic producers and small specialised producers who need our technical ability to solve particular difficulties.

Our Laboratory’s capabilities include:

Packaging: Impact is accredited to carry out a comprehensive range of UN Dangerous Good’s testing on plastic & metal drums and jerricans as well as composite packaging and fibreboard boxes. Impact is one of a handful of European test houses and the only one in the UK that can test with the full range of model liquids and customer own products.

Materials: Impact’s test laboratory is accredited for an extensive range of mechanical properties, including MFR, Density, Tensile, UV Weathering, Degradation, Absorption, Stress cracking to non accredited tests such as Charpy/IZOD impact, creep, permeation and many more. We are often involved with the design of bespoke testing methods as required by the project.

Pipes: Impact are accredited for ISO1167, ISO13479 & ISO9080 hydrostatic pressure testing of pipes and fittings. We also offer a wide range of other services including C-Ring, FNCT, cohesive/de-cohesive resistance as well as testing on electro-fusion & butt fusion joints.

Tanks: Impact are UKAS accredited and a European notified body for the testing of tanks, bunds and materials in accordance with EN13341, EN13575 and OFTEC OFST100.
We are a member of OFTEC and have extensive experience of roto-moulding and tanks having tested in excess of 90% of the polyethylene oil storage tanks that are sold in the UK & Ireland.

Oil & Gas: Impact has extensive experience in high performing polymers and composites operating at the temperatures, pressures and aggressive environments often found down hole and in the distribution of oil & gas. Impact’s experience includes pipes, risers, seals and cables in a range of polymers including Polyolefin through Nylons, PVDF and PEEK. Our bespoke testing design and capabilities includes simulation tests in conditions in excess of 40,000 psig and 200 C. Impact also carries out cost: benefit studies of products over design lifetime periods.

Working with a major manufacturer of polyolefin’s in KSA, over 3 years has seen savings in the range of $5-$10 million per annum, with individual projects giving payback periods of under 1 year by:

SPC Training: Making the language of SPC become part of company culture allows improvements to be tracked and future programs developed.
Cp and Cpk values of under 1.0 are commonplace and Impact typically raises them to well above 1.0 across our customers grade slate without the use of APC. Using APC we have delivered values of 1.5 which compares well with the top quartile performers in the Industry.

QC Laboratories: Delivering capability improvements and therefore confidence through training, process improvements, measuring capacity and supporting the implementation of ISO 17025.
The QC lab must deliver reliable results consistently in order for the plant to produce the best quality products cost effectively.

Supporting APC implementation: This requires good lower level control and a thorough understanding of the influence of a broad range of process parameters upon key product attributes. UN Consumer Packaging Testing

Failure of containers when transporting dangerous chemicals and other hazardous liquids has serious implications to people, property and/or the environment. Strict product safety and quality standards are in place against which such containers are tested to get UN approval. Impact is accredited to carry out a comprehensive range of UN Dangerous Good’s testing for liquids & solids on plastic & metal drums & jerricans as well as composite packaging & fibreboard boxes. Impact is one of a handful of European test houses and the only one in the UK that can test with the full range of model liquids and the customer‘s own products.

Since 2002, Impact has tested 1,000 batches of containers from across the globe to be used for transportation of chemicals or other hazardous materials. These tests are the final approval that the container is safe to use. Surprisingly, Impact’s results have shown that around 25% of these “final” tests have produced failures, requiring new product commercialisation to be stopped whilst the container is redesigned or reconfigured. Such unplanned failures delay product launches with the associated losses in sales revenue, whilst generating additional costs in redesign, prototype manufacture and re-testing. Impact’s testing capabilities and support is therefore very cost effective versus cost of failures, particularly if the Brand value is threatened.

Although UN testing of containers is stringent, it is possible to design and make products that pass every time. Impact’s experience has shown that failure to meet the test standards can arise from a variety of reasons, most commonly:

Unsuitable resin selection
Design flaws
Poor manufacturing control
Unsuitable or poor closures
Changes in paper supply for Fibreboard

Hydrostatic Pressure Pipe Testing

Impact Solution’s accredited laboratories have been pressure testing plastic pipes to ISO 1167 and ISO 13479 since 1984, and have provided these services independently under the Impact banner since 2002.

Over this c30 year period, Impact has served a broad portfolio of customers in the pipe sector covering the full supply chain from resin manufacturers (Ineos, Borealis, Dow, et al), through pipe manufacturers (GPS, Uponor, Durapipe, Micropol, et al) to asset owners and users in a wide range of applications including gas, water, sewage and oil & gas.

Impact has developed extensive product quality experience with all plastic pipe systems including HDPE, PP, PVC, ABS and more recently PVDF, Nylon and PEEK.

Impact’s staff have been testing pipes and joints since the early 80’s when, as part of BP Chemicals, they were part of the original team that developed some of the first PE80’s in the UK. Since then Impact has always been at the forefront of pipe design and testing across a wide range of materials including PE, PP, XLPE, Nylons, PVDF and PEEK.
Impact offers an extensive range of technical services designed to serve the needs of the pipe producer, installer, utility and main contractor i.e. the complete supply chain, which include:

Joint testing & failure analysis
Impact is set up to carry out testing on electrofusion & butt fusion joints to water industry standard WIS 4-32-08 and regularly carries out these tests as part of site quality checks on pipeline installations.
Impact is often used as an independent expert in pipeline systems to determine quality of fittings/materials and installation practices to determine the cause of failure in the event of a dispute.

Impact is able to provide a range of technical support on projects including training and project verification. Impact operates worldwide where high quality, safe installations are required.
