Our products

Product category: Maleic resins

XERAN® resins

Our XERAN® polymers contain maleic anhydride (MA) groups in the polymer chain, these highly functional MA group make our XERAN® a very efficient compatibilizer.
XERAN® polymers have a-polar and polar parts in the polymer chain making them ideal for normally immiscible systems, such as PC/ABS or PA/ABS. Additionally our XERAN® products can act as adhesion promoter in systems which normally require a primer or adhesion improver. XERAN® can also act as chain extender due to the presence of the MA groups which are reactive towards polyamides, polyesters and polycarbonate.

Most polymer blends are immiscible and need to be compatibilized, which makes it hard to determine a exact type for every specific blend on the market, but Polyscope works together with it’s customers to find the best possible solution for the compatibilization of their polymeric blends. Our experience with versatile MA groups can support our customers for the key properties necessary for a good compatibilizer.

XIRAN® compounds

XIRAN® compounds can be impact and glass reinforced modified SMA copolymers. The glass reinforced series XIRAN® SG grades are widely used in the automotive industry providing an excellent property profile for structural parts such as instrument panels (IP), carriers, and trims. XIRAN® SM grades are impact modified as well, but do not contain glass fibers, making them ideally suited for aesthetical applications requiring a smooth surface. Furthermore we supply XIRAN® SE grades, these compounds are optimized for sheet extrusion.

Our XIRAN® compounds provide:
· Excellent long term heat ageing properties

· Best in class paint and foam adhesion

· High precision molding with excellent shot-to-shot consistency

· Good chemical resistance

· High strength and stiffness

· High thermal resistance

·  Recyclable

Your Benefits
· High precision molding means lower waste and cost

· New design opportunities and reduced weight

· Reduced need for metal reinforcements

· No flame treatment necessary

· Reduced cycle times and cost

XIRAN® resins

Our copolymers are truly random copolymers consisting of styrene and maleic anhydride and are sold under the brand name XIRAN® SZ. These transparent products have varying maleic anhydride content of 8- 42%, with a high Tg (100 to 165°C). XIRAN® is highly appreciated in both engineering plastics and specialty chemicals applications due to the combination of the properties of styrene and maleic anhydride.

XIRAN® SZ grades can act as a versatile performance enhancer in engineering plastics applications, by offering increased thermal performance, adhesion improvement, outstanding dimensional properties and miscibility with a broad range of plastics.

In specialty chemicals applications XIRAN® SZ grades can be used as dispersing agents, epoxy cross-linking agents and sizing agents as well as for adhesion improvement in several applications due to the high reactivity of the maleic anhydride group.

XIRAN® IZ terpolymers add another layer to Polyscope’s portfolio due to addition of N-phenylmaleimide (NPMI) included in the SMA polymer backbone. These terpolymers offer a higher glass transition than the XIRAN® SZ copolymers, with a glass transition temperature (Tg) reaching 198°C. Compared to alternative technologies in the market, the XIRAN® IZ grades deliver a very high degree of efficiency by increasing the high heat performance of engineering plastic compounds at a lower additive level.

XIRAN® solutions

Styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) resins are hydrophobic but they can be easily hydrolyzed in caustic solutions giving aqueous anionic salt solutions. When dried, sodium and potassium salts demonstrate hydrophilic properties and as a result they are appreciated in water removable applications. On the other hand, the hydrophobic behavior of ammonium salt solutions after drying is valued for every application where water resistance is needed.

Polyscope supplies hydrolyzed styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers as sodium, potassium and ammonium salt solutions under the brand name XIRAN® SL. These are low viscosity, low VOC, freeze-thaw stable solutions with high dry solid content. XIRAN® SL grades can be used as dispersants in the following applications: pigments, inks and coatings, paraffin wax emulsions, adhesives and paper sizing.

Moreover, styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) hydrolyzed solutions (XIRAN® SL) have good adhesion to glass and are compatible with natural materials like starch and soya proteins. They are used to improve performance of other systems such as Phenol-Formaldehyde, Urea-Formaldehyde, Melamine Formaldehyde systems or other type of no added formaldehyde systems.

Styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers are also available as fully formulated, ready-to-use, thermosetting binder systems which can be used in many applications such as glass/stonewool insulation, automotive insulation and glass fiber mats for non- woven applications such as vinyl flooring, ceiling tiles, roofing shingles. Other applications include filtration media and backing of gypsum boards. These thermosetting binder systems are no added formaldehyde binder systems used as an alternative to acrylic and phenolic resins exhibiting good wet strength as well as excellence moisture resistance and strength after curing.
