Milliken invites polypropylene (PP) producers, compounders and converters attending K 2016 to join with it to enable future innovation across the plastics industry by “Making polypropylene clearer, better, faster. Together”.
At Booth A27/Hall 6, Milliken will give center stage to the advantages of using its technology leading clarifiers and nucleators to improve PP, demonstrating the range of solutions available to suit specific individual or application requirements. Milliken’s clarifiers and nucleators embrace the key sustainability and performance related challenges affecting today’s plastics processing industry. For example, the move toward lightweight applications with high-performance features, functional solutions, energy-efficiency and process optimization.

Making PP Clearer
Around 80% of clear PP parts and applications available today are clarified with Millad® NX™ 8000. The clarifier is at the forefront in improving the transparency of PP, with Milliken supporting the high demand from customers with a major capacity expansion at its plant. The new capacity for Millad NX 8000 is set to be available by the end of 2016.
Millad NX 8000, which makes PP UltraClear and is known in the market as NX UltraClear PP, allows for material replacement in a wide range of processes. For example, using NX UltraClear PP, converters can create lightweight, microwaveable and recyclable PP thermoformed food trays with the attractive clarity normally associated with PET packaging. In injection molding, NX UltraClear PP provides an attractive alternative to polycarbonate (PC) and styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) in transparent consumer goods, appliances and other packaging applications. In blow molding, the high-clarity of NX UltraClear PP make this material an innovative replacement for PC in babybottles and an attractive alternative to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in personal care bottles and detergent bottles. NX UltraClear PP makes it is possible to integrate handles, soft-touch and create complex, eye-catching designs in a blow-molded bottle that is also easier and faster to empty than other solutions.
Making PP Better
Milliken’s Hyperform® HPN nucleators provide an excellent balance of physical properties, making it possible to maximize PP performance to achieve improved end-product performance, and faster, trouble-free production. They also override the nucleating effect of pigments meaning that high part quality is possible regardless of the color used. Hyperform HPN allows for stronger, lighter parts by achieving an improvement in stiffness of around 10% when compared to conventionally nucleated PP, while still retaining the same impact behavior as a non-nucleated resin. Hyperform HPN improves the stiffness of non-nucleated PP by 25-30%. The unique isotropic shrinkage behavior of each Hyperform HPN nucleator allows dimensionally stable, non-warping tailor made PP solutions to be developed for use even in demanding injection molding applications like caps & closures, and in the elevated temperature environments like in some automotive and appliances applications. With Hyperform HPN, dimensional stability is maintained at temperatures up to 25ºC higher than when used with a non-nucleated resin and up to 10ºC higher than a conventional nucleated resin. Hyperform HPN nucleators require low loading and have no reported health and safety issues, supporting the development of more sustainable applications.
Making PP Faster
In the injection molding process, PP clarified with Millad NX 8000 also allows lower processing temperatures compared to conventional clarifiers. The lower injection temperatures allow shorter cooling times which speed up the production process. Furthermore, the excellent solubility of Millad NX 8000 in PP with a high melt flow rate (MFR) makes it ideal for meeting the growing demand for high MFR grades to support faster production.
The lower injection temperatures of PP clarified with Millad NX 8000 promote more energy-efficient operations, which have been validated by the independent organization UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
Hyperform HPN nucleators achieve a balanced orientation of crystal structures in PP that is proven to give excellent dimensional stability and reduced warpage/shrinkage behavior to PP even in highly demanding applications. The combination of these advantages enables converters to achieve higher productivity, cost reduction opportunities and improved end-product performance. Converters report a decreased cycle time of 10-15% during production when replacing resins nucleated with a conventional nucleating agent. Hyperform HPN has easy dispersion which follows the trend for high MFR reactor grade homo and impact copolymers.
At K 2016, Milliken will extend its partnership approach beyond PP with opportunities for the plastics industry to advance the features and performance of materials such as PET, PE and PU. Key highlights include Alphasan® Antimicrobial solutions to protect plastics degradation by fungi and bacteria, and the latest in Zelec electro-conductive powders (ECP) to support compounders, molders and film extruders in meeting evolving electrostatic discharge standards. Visitors can also look forward to the award-winning Milliguard™ AOX-1 antioxidant additive and Reactint® Polymeric Colorants for PU; ClearShield® UV absorber for PET bottles and containers that effectively protect UV-sensitive packed contents from degradation; and Hyperform nucleators for PE focused on significantly enhancing the performance and processing of PE films, injection molded parts and extruded applications.
