Polyethylene Packaging

Cast-, Calander- and Blown Films
Cast- and Calender-Film extrusion are production processes with chill-roll or smoothing roll technology where the melted granules are pressed through a flat-die.

Blown films are made in a blown extrusion process, obtaining a vertical film bubble which is formed with a ring die. This film can be used as tubular film, half tubular film or flat films for continued processing.

Cast-, calendar- and blown films are not, or only slightly oriented.

All production processes are applied for manufacturing Polyethylene and Polypropylene films for applications in food packaging, hygiene applications, like diapers as well as barrier films or synthetic paper.

Polycarbonate and PMMA Sheets

All PC sheets are protected by a thin co-extruded layer (Cap Layer). This layer is based on PC resin, enriched with a high level of UV absorbers. The recommended layer thickness is taking into consideration the layer erosion over the service life and the UV additive optical density, so no harmful UV light will penetrate the Cap Layer to the unprotected Polycarbonate.
 
Kafrit UV compounds are designed and tailored according to the customer‘s specifications and Kafrit‘s vast experience in this field. All Kafrit solutions are colored with a bluish tint to hide the UVA yellow shade, and contain optical-brightener to enable layer identification by the sheet producer. Kafrit is offering unique coloring abilities to meet customer demand.
 
The compound flow properties are a key factor in uniform and stable layer distribution across the sheet‘s width. The Cap Layer flow is determined by the PC type, lubricant level and, most importantly, the UV absorbers types and level.
 
Kafrit solutions offer an optimized MVI based on years of experience. Our know-how allows us to offer a variety of MVIs according to the final application and production process. We use different types of UVA compounds and Masterbatches to insure optimal UV protection, process optimization and the best value each and every customer needs for their products.

Antiblock

Antiblocking-Masterbatches are necessary and extremely helpful for producing thin plastic films. Both the action and the use of antiblocking are quite easy but, despite that, we have realized that their use is often not appropriate.
Leaving aside for a moment their primary use, we have to consider that antiblocking have a relevant effect on other properties of the film such as, for instance, optical properties concerning haze and gloss; values of the coefficient of friction; printing and metallization qualities.
Moreover, their wrong use can also influence negatively the barrier values achievable.

In addition, it might be of interest to notice that, if antiblockings are used or dosed badly, they can affect negatively the above mentioned properties, resulting in a final price higher and unjustified, as it happens sometimes.

Thanks to our more than 40 years of experience in the production of MB antiblocking and helped by the availability of a wide range in terms of chemical nature, particles sizes and concentration, we can help our customers with every sort of appliance. Our efforts are aimed at achieving the best performance offering a fair compromise between cost and benefit.

Antioxidants

High shear forces and heat during processing and end use adversely affect the properties of plastics and endanger the functionality of the final products: The sensitive bonds of the polymer chains are dissolved. Free radicals are formed which cause secondary reactions, in turn dissolve the other previously intact polymer chains: a chain reaction that leads inevitably to the dissolution of the polymeric structures. Already during the production this process is beginning, which is manifested by dull, yellowish parts and ends with the complete dissolution of the product. It is therefore necessary to slow down the process, or even prevent them entirely. The specially developed so-called antioxidants have been designed to effectively protect the polymeric structure of the plastic.

Antislip

Heavy duty bags are typically stacked upon pallets for transportation. Due to the slippiness of the polymeric surface of such bags they tend to slip and move during transportation and storage.
This is dangerous as moving goods generally pose a risk for accidents to humans.

An antislip masterbatch containing high amounts of special particles in size and chemistry will be added into the skin layer of such heavy duty bags thereby creating a solid surface roughness.
In such way the bags will no longer move easily during transportation but rather remain in their original position. It should be noted that the adddition of slip additives obviously is counter productive and must be avoided.

Antistatic

Electrostatic charges are commonly generated by friction contact between two materials with different susceptibilities to electron loss.

Most plastics have high surface resistivity, ranging from 10(14) – 10(18) Ohm.

Relative humidity has a major influence on the static electric build up. 

Static electricity can cause electrical discharge, which could destroy a polymer film, give electrical shocks to handlers, start a fire or cause an explosion. Static electricity can cause dust pick up (which ruins clarity), processing and handling problems. 

CONSTAB‘s range of antistatic-masterbatches is designed to overcome the above mentioned problems.

Color

Colorants are materials that change the color of transmitted or reflected light by wavelength-selective absorption. Pigments are not migrating and insoluble in the matrix. Depending from the concentration they are giving a transparent, translucent to opaque appearance. Dyes are soluble in the matrix and can migrate depending from the concentration and type of matrix. When used alone they give very clear transparent appearance. For improved handling and best dispersion colors are used either as granular or liquid color concentrate.

Slip

Polyolefins have a high COF (coefficient of friction) of the solid material which leads to a tendency to adhere to themselves or a metal surface during processing of the non molten material (a film for instance).

A desirable COF would be 0,2 - 0,3.

These values can be reached with the use of slip additives. CONSTAB has a full range of masterbatches containing migrating (fatty acid amides for instance) or non migrating slip additives which enables manufacturers to formulate films with the desired COF values.

Nucleating agent

The properties of films and articles made of semicrystalline polymers like e.g. PP-homo or HDPE, strongly depend on processing parameters. Especially the cooling rate during fime extrusion or injection moulding can change the crystallization speed of such polymers enormously and there for influence the stiffness or clarity of the final article.

Nucleating agents are substances higly effective in reducing the crystallization temperature of these polymers and enabling lower processing temperatures, saving energy and reducing cycle times and production costs.

Depending on their chemistry some nucleating agents are referred to as clarifier. Their main effect is an increase in crystallization homogenity resulting in improved clarity and gloss. For example injection moulded PP-houshold containers and cups are a typical application for nucleating agents used as clarifiers.

UV stabilizer

This sophisticated group of additives is available for industrial as well as food packaging applications. UV-stabilizers do not absorb UV-light but protect the polymer made film or injection moulded article from the detrimental effects such short wavelength have on the plastic. Chemical degradation leading to a loss of mechanical properties (strength, stiffness) as well as discolouraion in outdoor applications is effectively avoided.

Due to the complex nature of such stabilization processes many different UV-stabilizer solutions do exist for each individual application. A detailed technical recommendation might be generated based on the requirements of any customers need and the vast experience of KAFRIT and CONSTAB selling UV-stabilizers for more than 40 years!

Matt compounds

The products are based on special selected α-Olefine grades. The surface roughness and matt appearance of BOPP films are resulting from our knowledge to combine suitable polymers.

Typical applications of matt compounds are:

 -Translucent, opaque and coloured (e.g. gold, silver) films that require a
  matt appearance
 -Heat-sealable packaging films
 -Metallizable films with matt effect (steel appearance)
 -Matt films with high coefficient of friction (COF) for packaging films with
  anti-skid properties

All required film properties such as low gloss, high haze and soft touch effect can be achieved by using the CONSTAB Matt Compounds.

Processing aid

Blown and cast films made from m-LLDPE (metallocene catalyst) require the addition of a processing aid. Although only very little amounts of such agents are added they have a pronounced effect on the quality of the film as well as the available production time of the extruder.

Shark skin, or more academic melt fracture, is a physical phenomenon while extruding LLDPE: a slip-stick effect at the dies exit creates a regular mechanical pattern on the surface of the film. Processing aid effectively help to eliminate this disturbing surface defect.

Also the accumulation of die deposit is suppressed drastically so that the production intervalls are much longer before a production stop is necessary to clean the extruder.

Fillers or colorants which have a high light reflecting and scattering effect over the whole visible spectrum resulting in high opacity and brightness.

The most important white pigment is titanium dioxide providing highest opacity and brightness.

Zinc sulfide, also combined with barium sulfate to the so called lithopone, provides lower friction and abrasion in the processing equipment.

Calcium carbonate is typically used only as extender in titanium dioxide formulation or as cavitating agent in biaxially oriented films.

Purging compound

Purge or cleaning compounds are ready to use mixtures of organic and inorganic agents used to clean a polymer processing unit inbetween seperate production lots. Also before production shut downs at weekends the use of a purge compound is strongly recommended to avoid the occurrence of black specs in films.

Often these purge compounds are used in combination with stabilizer masterbatches (antioxidants) to further improve its cleaning and purging effects.
