Surface Additives

During the application of liquid coatings on surfaces a multitude of surface defects can occur. The cause for this is, among others, significantly differing surface tensions. If, for example, the surface tension of the coating is higher than that of the substrate, this manifests itself in poor wetting (high contact angle) and, with that poor adhesion and cratering. Also after the application and while the coating is drying, local surface tension differences can cause unfavorable leveling and the floating of pigments. BYK offers a variety of additives which can improve or even prevent these surface defects.

In addition, additives from this product class can also influence the surface slip and increase the cleanability.

Wetting and Dispersing Additives

BYK's wetting and dispersing additives result in a fine and homogeneous distribution of solid particles in liquid media and ensure the long-term stability of such systems. The additives stabilize pigments (inorganic, organic and also effect pigments) and fillers. The liquid phase can comprise water and the entire range of organic solvents of varying polarity.

Wetting agents are surface-active substances and improve the wetting of solids. Dispersing agents prevent particles flocculating by various mechanisms (electrostatic effects, steric effects). Wetting and dispersing additives unite both mechanisms of action in one product, i.e. they are both wetting and stabilizing.

Defoamers and Air Release Additives

Foam is a dispersion of a gas in a liquid. The occurrence of foam when producing and processing coatings, printing inks, plastic materials, but also in many other industrial processes, is usually not desired. Defoamers or air release agents prevent and destroy the foam bubbles and enable an improved processing, a perfect surface and optimum product properties.

BYK offers defoamers which can be used in a variety of different applications. You can divide them into three main groups:

Silicone defoamers
Mineral oil defoamers
Polymer defoamers

About us

Company details

BYK is a leading supplier in the field of additives and measuring instruments. Additives are chemical substances which, even in small quantities, improve product properties such as mechanical or flame-retardant properties. Our high-quality processing additives and coupling agents make resin infusion more efficient and enable the production of lighter and stronger composite structures or an optimized fiber wetting both in thermoplastics and duromers. This leads to an improved processing of, for example, carbon fibers, and it produces a good surface quality. BYK additives also make their contribution with respect to indoor emissions. The additives allow the flow behavior of liquid materials to be adjusted in such a way that optimum conditions are achieved for smooth manufacturing and application processes.

The coatings, printing inks, and plastics industries are among the main consumers of BYK additives. But BYK additives also improve product characteristics and production processes in the exploration technology oil & gas, the manufacture of care products, the manufacture of adhesives and sealants, and in construction chemistry. Testing and measuring instruments from BYK effectively evaluate the quality of color, gloss, and appearance as well as the physical properties of paint, plastic and paper products, and they are an important part of quality control.

As a globally operating specialty chemicals company, BYK has 14 production sites in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, the USA, and China. Today, the company employs around 2,000 people worldwide and invests 8% of sales in R&D.

So why not use our innovative power to your advantage? What is best for your formulation? The BYK lab managers, technicians, R&D specialists, and sales force are keen to answer your questions at the K 2016 in Hall 05, Booth E17.
