Additive Masterbatches / Slip Masterbatches (AddKan Range Additive Masterbatches)

Action of Slip Masterbatches :

Fatty acid amides find application as slip additives. During processing these masterbatches are solubilized in the amorphous melt, but as the cooling of the polymer occurs the fatty acid amide is "squeezed" out forming a lubricating layer at the polymer surface. Addition of slip additive thus gives easy slippage of film over other surfaces.

AddKan Slow Slip Masterbatches :

AddKan Slow Slip additive masterbatches are based on highly pure erucamide- a slow slip additive.Films made with slow slip additives can be printed offline (after a few days) Normal addition levels vary between 1-3% depending upon desired reduction in COF or reduction in surface roughness.

AddKan Fast Slip Masterbatches :

AddKan Fast Slip additive masterbatches are based on highly pure oleamide – a fast slip additive.Oleamide migrates quicker than erucamide and is often called "fast blooming". However after a certain time the slower erucamide will provide films with a lower COF than oleamide. Erucamide is used in higher temperature processing applications and it also stays at the surface longer, not venting off as smoke. Oleamide is used where a low COF is needed in a short period of time, while the slower migration of erucamide can be advantageous in roll stock applications and on-line corona treatment.

Films made with fast slip additives should be printed immediately after they are made as later on Slip additives may hinder with adhesion of lamination films or printing inks.Normal addition levels vary between 1-3% depending upon desired reduction in COF or reduction in surface roughness.

AddKan Slip Masterbatches :

There are two types of Slip Masterbatches available :-

Slow Slip Masterbatches (AD/01/0007) – Lowers the friction between film layers and other surfaces.
Fast Slip Masterbatches (AD/01/0026) – Quickly blooms on the surface of the film to impart slip properties and reduce COF.

Why Use Desiccant Masterbatches?

Desiccant masterbatches can counter problems which develop during the processing of plastics due to the presence of moisture and prevents adsorption of moisture during transportation. Moisture can be present in raw materials such as hygroscopic polymers, fillers and pigments. Reprocess polymer can also have high moisture content. When processing polymer with high moisture content the polymer can become porous and show voids/lower tensile in the final articles or extruded/blown sheet. In film applications the high moisture content can lead to film bubble breakage.

'Biofil' additive master batch

Over 2 decades, plastic material have gained wide spread applications in the food, clothing, housing, transportation, health care, packaging and leisure industries. Plastics exhibit number of advantages such as light weight, durable, non-corrosive and relatively unbreakable over alternative material.

However plastics, being a petrochemical product have some disadvantages. The main one being its inability to degrade in the environment. Researchers at kandui r & d centre have been working on addressing this major issue and have now succeeded in developing 'biofil' biodegradable master batch, which would aid plastic products to degrade. Biofil’ has been tested for bio degradation as per following astm (american society of testing materials)

The advantages of 'Biofil' are:

By addition of 'Biofil' to Polymer, the finished product will not degrade on shelf, at least for 2 years;
'Biofil' can be blended with LDPE and LLDPE resins but not with 100% HDPE. However
'Biofil' can be compatible with HDPE when the polymer is blended with 30% - 40% of LLDPE.
On addition of 'Biofil' to the Polymer, the product will biodegrade after its shelf life in any or all of the conditions i.e., Aerobic, Anaerobic, UV Light exposure. This is a unique feature of 'Biofil' as most other Biodegradable Master batches does not have such universal characteristic. Some Biodegradable Master batches will only be photodegradable i.e. the product has to be exposed to sunlight for required period of time. In other words, if the product is buried in a Landfill, which is inaccessible to sunlight, the product will not degrade. A few other Biodegradable Master batches need oxygen for degradation and some others do not require oxygen. However 'Biofil' is not restricted to any such conditions.
'Biofil' is non toxic hence it is absolutely safe to use in food applications.
'Biofil' is cheaper then directly using biodegradable additives with polymers – as in 'Biofil' biodegradebal additive is added to filler.
Thus for a truly biodegradeable masterbache - you may find 'Biofil' an ideal choice

Why use Hi-Gloss Masterbatch?

A lot of calcium/talc based compounds are added to moulded articles and films to reduce cost and/or to impart some properties. But this results in a rough (matt) finish to the product.

AddKan Hi-Gloss Masterbatch contain special additives to improve gloss and smoothness of the final product.

The addition of AddKan Higloss Masterbatch improves the gloss and also improves the output. Addition level of 1-3 % depends upon the gloss requirement and the percentage of reprocess granules and other compounds (Filler) used.

Why use Polymer Processing Aid Masterbatches?

Polymer Process Aids (PPA) masterbatches are specifically designed to enhance extrusion ability of plastics (PE Films, pipes, tubes...) leading to productivity and / or quality improvement.

These Masterbatches are based on Fluoroelastomers and are widely recommended for improving the processibility of polymers at higher shear rates.These are formulated to form a microscopic dispersed phase within the polymer carrier. During processing the fluoropolymer gets coated on the walls of the extruder and die. This reduces the extuder backpressure to decrease. To achieve the coating in a reasonable time the process aid masterbatch is typically added at 1% until the beneficial effects are seen. After this the addition rate can be reduced to 0.5% down to even 0.25% as long as the effect continues to be evident. A small addition must be maintained throught the extrusion run.

Normally there is a common practice to process at higher temperatures to get maximum out put which causes degradation, die deposition and reduction in mechanical properties. By adding PPA MB , processing is possible at lower temperature with higher output without compromising the mechanical properties.

Why use Flame Retardant Masterbatches?

As many plastics are inherently flammable, measures must be taken to increase their safety in applications where there is the risk of fire. Often the most cost effective method of doing this is to add a flame retardant additive during processing. There are two types of Flame retardant master batches available:
Containing Halogen free additives
Containing Halogenated additives
 

Careful choice of the flame retardant for a particular polymer and application is important. Additives must be chosen to function properly in the polymer they need to protect. Other properties of the flame retardant must also be considered. The additive should be compatible with the polymer, it should not adversely affect physical properties and ideally be effective at low addition rates. Additionally, in certain applications, it is desirable that the additive is colourless and does not affect UV stability.

Additive Masterbatches / UV Stabilizer Masterbatch (AddKan Range Additive Masterbatches)

Why Use UV/Light Stabilizer Masterbatches :

Exposure to sunlight and some artificial lights can have adverse effects on the useful life of plastic products. UV radiation can break down the chemical bonds in a polymer. This process is called photodegradation. It ultimately causes cracking, chalking, color changes and the loss of physical properties. To counteract the damaging effect of UV light, UV stabilizers are used to solve the degradation problems associated with exposure to sunlight. UV stabilizers can be categorized by two general classifications - ultraviolet light absorber (UVA) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS). HALS are extremely efficient stabilizers against light- induced degradation of most polymers. They do not absorb UV radiation, but act to inhibit degradation of the polymer. Significant levels of stabilization are achieved at relatively low concentrations. HALS high efficiency and longevity are due to a cyclic process wherein the HALS are regenerated rather than consumed during the stabilization process. UV light is normally defined as being within the region of 280-400nm, while visible light is found within 400-800nm. UV light is then subdivided further into UV-A (the lower wavelengths, peaking around 310nm) and UV-B (slightly higher wavelengths peaking at around 350nm). Sunlight intensity and composition varies according to latitude, atmospheric effects etc. so it is important that the additive (or more normally the combination of additives) is selected to suit the exact application. It is therefore important to identify where in the world a final product will be used and the required life span. Other factors that affect the choice of UV stabilisation package include product dimensions, type and colour of pigments present and application information such as food or pesticide contact.

AddKan UV Stabilizer Master batches:

AddKan UV Stabilizer Masterbatches are based on HALS in a polyolefin carrier. Both variants - Food grade and Non Food grade are available with active content as 10% or 20%. These masterbatches retard the degradation caused by UV radiation and thus increase the working life of end product even on exposure to UV radiation.

The addition level of AddKan UV Stabilizer Masterbatch depends on the thickness of article, intensity of Sun/UV light, period of exposure and life expectancy required in these conditions.br/>

AddKan UV Stabilizer Masterbatches are available for specialised applications like green house films. They have UV stabilizers which are resistant to pesticides. Depending upon customer needs we can supply UV stabilized Colour Masterbatches also.

AddKan UV Stablizer Master batches:

There are five types of UV Stabilizer Masterbatches available.:-

UV - Non Food Grade Masterbatches (AD/01/0002) - Provides excellent light stability for thick sections & products having higher specific surface area.
PP UV Master batches (AD/02/0037) - PP based UV Stabilizer Master batch. Used in PP Raffia and Moulding applications requiring highest light stability in medium term.
UV - Economic Food Grade Master batches (AD/01/0017) - Absorbs ultra violet rays of the sun where indirect food contact approval is required.

PPR Pipes - PP UV Master batches (AD/02/0028) - Used in PPR Pipes. Stable against hydrolysis and can also be used in blow moulded and under-the-hood automotive parts. Increases the life span of PPR Pipes along with the combination of LTHA Masterbatch.

These masterbatches are based on fatty acid ester type of anti static agents to neutralize the charges on the surface of the polymer. By using anti static additives, problems caused by static electricity charge will be reduced or eliminated. These problems are:

Dust pick up which can ruin clarity and surface finish.
Handling problem- e.g.,Mutual repulsion of bodies of the same charge in polymer based packing.
Electronic static discharge damaging electronic equipments.
 

AddKan Antistatic Masterbatch works by migrating to the surface of the polymer. It functions usually in a molecular or multi-molecular layer and attracts water molecules from the atmosphere. The water lowers the surface resistivity from the approximate value of 1014 – 1015 ohms for most polymers (including styrenics and polyolefinics) to 1011- 108 ohm . Normal addition levels of the 10% active content masterbatch is 3-5%.

Antistatic master batches for appliance parts :

These components are used in manufacturing of appliances parts which are used in washing machines, refrigerators etc..Precautions should be maintained to keep these parts dust free owing to accumulation of static charges. These master batches are developed using carefully selected anti-static agents that induce the conductivity to the components, eliminating static charges without affecting aesthetics of the components including clarity, etc..

Antistatic master batches for electronic applications :

The use of anti-static agents in polymer components of electronic applications plays a pivotal role, as static charges can result in electronic discharge e.g., when films come in contact with sensitive electronic equipment during packing or when electronic components stored in plastic bin for longer period can damage the components. We offer anti static masterbatch based on amine derivative agents for the above application even under low relative humidity conditions.

AddKan Antistatic Masterbatches:

There are two types of Antistatic Masterbatch available:- Antistatic Economic Masterbatch (AD/01/0009) – Used mainly in films especially for electronic components to reduce static charge.

Why use Anti Oxidant masterbatches?

Plastics generally ages rapidly under the effects of light, oxygen and heat leading to :

Loss of strength, stiffness of flexibility
Discoloration
Scratching and loss of gloss
 

After polymerization, most plastics are pelletized and shipped to compounders, polymer converters and subsequently manufacturers of the final plastic article. During this process, the polymer undergoes several processing steps which usually involves extrusion of molten polymer. Each processing step causes degradation, a result of the combined action of shear, heat and oxygen.

Thermo-oxidative degradation takes place by a free radical mechanism called autoxidation,which leads to a variety of oxidative reactions which either cause

Decrease in the molecular weight of the polymer (chain scission), or
Increase in the molecular weight of the polymer due to recombination reactions.
 

Both types of reactions take place simultaneously, but one or the other will predominate depending on the processing conditions, the molecular structure and the polymerization technology used to initially manufacture the polymer.

Types of Antioxidants

Primary Antioxidants:

These interrupt the primary oxidation cycle by removing the propagating radicals. Such compounds are also called Chain Breaking Antioxidants and examples include the hindered phenols and aromatic amines. Aromatic amines tend to discolour the end product and hence their use in plastics is limited. The phenolic antioxidants, however, are widely used in polymers. Careful selection of the phenolic antioxidant is required as the oxidation products of some phenols may discolour the polymer. The formation of chromophores is directly related to the structure of the phenol and discolouration can therefore be minimized by choosing a phenolic with a specific structure together with the use of suitable co-stabilizers.

Secondary Antioxidants :

These compounds are also called Preventative Antioxidants as they interrupt the oxidative cycle by preventing or inhibiting the formation of free radicals. The most important preventive mechanism is the hydroperoxide decomposition where the hydroperoxides are transformed into non-radical, nonreactive and thermally stable products. Phosphites or phosphonites organic sulphur containing compounds and dithiophosphonates are widely used to achieve this acting as peroxide decomposers. Choosing the correct system choice of antioxidant varies depending on a number of factors, including the base polymer, the extrusion temperature and the performance targets of the end-use application. Efficiency of an antioxidant upon processing is dependent on its ability to reach the polymer’s attacked sites by diffusing through the viscous melt. The compatibility with and the solubility of the additive in the solid polymer, its low volatility and its resistance to extraction into the environment are also clearly important. Synergism, where a co-operative interaction between antioxidants leads to a greater overall effect can occur. It may arise from using two chemically similar antioxidants or when two different antioxidant functions are present in the same molecule, or when mechanistically different antioxidants are used together e.g., chain breaking antioxidants with peroxide decomposers.

Why Use PPR-PP LTHA (Long Term Heat Ageing) Antioxidant Masterbatches? – To Keep Plastics Young

Plastic generally ages rapidly under the effects of light, oxygen and heat or catalyst residues leading to loss of strength, stiffness, or flexibility, discoloration scratching and loss of gloss. Once the polymer is exposed to further shear stress, heat, light, air, water, radiation, or mechanical loading, chemical reactions start in the polymer which has the net result of changing the chemical composition and the molecular weight of the polymer. These reactions, in turn, lead to a degradation of the physical and optical properties of the polymer. In practice, any change of the polymer properties relative to the initial, desirable properties is called degradation. In this sense, "degradation" is a generic term for all reactions which are possible in a polymer except curing. In most of the polymers reactions generate an "Auto-Oxidation-Process". This means that once oxidation starts - which it always will - it sets off a chain reaction which accelerates degradation unless stabilizers are used to interrupt the oxidation cycle.

Action of PPR-PP LTHA Antioxidant Masterbatches :

This group of antioxidant and heat-stabilizer Masterbatches improves the Long Term Heat Ageing properties of polymers against oxidative influences and protects pipes, sheets and injection moulded PP parts against thermo-oxidative degradation. They're used especially where polymers have to act at elevated temperatures for long times like in PP-R pipes & automotive applications.

Why Use Anti-Block Cum Slip Masterbatches :

Antiblock Materbatches are added to films and bags to keep the sheets from sticking together. They are used to lessen the adhesion of the surface of products made from the formulation of like or different surfaces. These Masterbatches act by producing a slight roughening of the surface-thus allowing easy opening of bags.

Many types of antiblock are available, ranging from synthetic silica formulations to give high clarity to natural silica to offer high performance where cost is important and clarity can be compromised to calcium carbonate where simple antiblocking without clarity is required.

For speciality applications more esoteric systems are available such as organic based antiblocks are used.

Antiblock Cum Slip masterbatches can be produced in a wide range of polymers including polyethylene, polypropylene, ionomers, polyamides, thermoplastics polyurethanes and others.

Combinations with antiblock and slip products offer cost effective products for use in the film industry.Antiblock agents are mainly used in film extrusion.

AddKan Anti-Block Masterbatches :

AddKan Anti-Block Masterbatches are based on chemically modified minerals and have 10% active ingredient. Once compounded into a plastic these additives create a microrough surface which reduces the adhesion between film layers and lowers the blocking tendancy.

Two factors determine the antiblocking effect:

Number of particles of antiblock at the film surface.
Size of the antiblock particles.The greater the concentration of antiblock present then the rougher the film surface produced. However it is important that the particles are well dispersed as agglomerates reduce antiblocking performance. Conversely the coarser the particles the further the two film layers are kept apart.
 

AddKan Anti Block Cum Slip Masterbatche:-

There is one type of Anti Block cum Slip Masterbatches available. Anti-Block cum Slip Master batches (AD/01/0035) – Keeps the sheets from sticking together for better open ability and unwinding of film rolls.
