Products

Peter Greven has been producing and developing metallic soaps, lubricants and special stabilizers for both the plastics industry and stabilizer manufacturers for many years. Our philosophy as a company in the oleochemical industry is to deliver high-quality additives to our customers.

1. PVC

PVC is used in a wide range of areas, from standard technical products to special medical applications. This development would never have been possible without the use of appropriate stabilizers which protect PVC from decomposition when exposed to heat or light. Probably the most important class of the stabilizers are the metallic soaps. Metallic soaps not only have excellent stabilizing properties, they are also good lubricants.

Products of this category:

LIGASTAR CA 600

LIGASTAR CA 600 G

LIGASTAR ZN 101/6

LIGASTAR ZN 104 G

LIGASTAR MG 700

LIGASTAB CAL

LIGASTAB ZNL

LIGASTAB ZN 108

(Information about LUBRICANTS can be found under category LUBRICANTS)

2. POLYOLEFINS:

Compared to PVC, polyolefins are easy-to-handle plastics with naturally favourable working properties and good thermal stability in the absence of oxygen. The additives mainly used to stabilize these plastics are antioxidants. However, most catalysts contain chloride, and there is a risk of hydrochloric acid formation during processing which can affect the performance and easily corrode work tools. To prevent this, 0.05% to 0.2% calcium or zinc stearate is added to the formulations. Calcium stearate has proved especially beneficial in this regard due to its higher affinity to chloride.

Metallic soaps for Polyolefins:

THERMOSETTING PLASTICS

Metallic soaps and oleochemical additives serve as release agents. Stearates are mainly used as release agents for the subsequent moulding process. Especially zinc stearate has shown to perform very well due to its low moisture content and low melting point.

POLYSTYRENES

Polystyrene has a comparatively high thermal stability and can be processed mainly without stabilizers. However it loses this property upon copolymerisation, requiring the use of antioxidants. The use of oleochemical additives is usually limited to lubricants and separating agents, which must be added to the plastics in bigger quantities to ensure optimal workability. The effects of lubricants are very similar to those in PVC, especially with some copolymers such as ABS.

FURTHER APPLICATIONS

Various stearates, LIGASTAR CA 800, LIGASTAR ZN 101/6, LIGASTAR MG 700 or LIGASTAR AL D2 and TR are used in polyamides, polycarbonates and acrylic resins. Which additive is the right one depends on the processing conditions and its solubility in the respective plastic. In general, free flowing properties and workability of the components are improved. LIGASTAR AL TR is particularly suitable for transparent applications in acrylic glass. LIGASTAR AL D2 is suitable for colour stabilization during melt-extrusion of polyester fibres. LIGASTAR CA 800, LIGASTAR ZN 101/6, LIGASTAR MG 700 or LIGASTAR AL D2 are added to hot–melt adhesive formulations during pulverisation and improve the lubricating and separating properties as well as free flowing ability of the initial products. LIGASTAR NA und LIGASTAR KA have proved useful as effective emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization.

LUBRICANTS

Peter Greven has been producing and developing metallic soaps, lubricants and special stabilizers for both the plastics industry and stabilizer manufacturers for many years. Our philosophy as a company in the oleochemical industry is to deliver high-quality additives to our customers.

1. PVC

PVC is now used in a wide range of areas, from standard technical products to special medical applications. This development would never have been possible without the use of appropriate stabilizers which protect PVC from decomposition when exposed to heat or light. Probably the most important class of the stabilizers are the metallic soaps. Metallic soaps not only have excellent stabilizing properties, they are also good lubricants.

Lubricants are just as indispensable as additives in the manufacture of PVC as stabilizers. Lubricants are usually based on straight-chain hydrocarbon with different functional groups. The properties for technical applications vary depending on the ratio between the two components. A distinction is made between internal and external lubrication. Internal lubricants are clearly polar and reduce the friction between the individual PVC chains. This results in a reduction in the viscosity of the melted PVC, good transparency and a low tendency to plate out. External lubricants reduce the friction between the plastics (polymers) and the tool surface. This improves the quality of the surface of the plastics. However, this usually leads to an increase in the melting time. By nature, the materials are more prone to the plate out effect. It should also be noted that most lubricants canot be definitely assigned to either one of these groups – many of them fall somewhere in between.

About us

Company details

Company Peter Greven

Peter Greven GmbH & Co. KG is a producer of oleochemical additives. Founded in 1923, the familiy owned company developed to an important and internationally known manufacturer.

Our headquarter is in Bad Münstereifel (Germany), where metallic soaps, ester lubricants, fatty acids and glycerine are produced on tallow basis. Due to the versatility of these products and the wide product range these additives are used in various industrial sectors of which the plastic industry is the biggest and most important branch. Our products are developed according to and based on the requirements and demands of global plastic producers and processors.
Our product portfolio is including the following additives:

Ø The trade name LIGASTAR® describes our portfolio of calcium, zinc, magnesium and aluminium stearates and laurates. These products are used as stabilizers in the PVC and Polyolefin industry and are essential components of high quality plastics.

Ø Besides our diversified range of stearates, we offer several lubricants under the trademark Ligalub®. In addition to the established products we will present new LIGALUB® compounds this year.

In our subsidiaries in Venlo (Netherlands) and Penang (Malaysia) we produce metallic soaps and dispersions based on vegetable fatty acids (palm oil) mainly for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industry.

The Peter Greven Group employs more than 250 people and has a world wide developed distribution network with qualified partners. One strength of the company is to react flexible on customers’ requests and to offer a high after-sales-service. Peter Greven is focussing on growth and invests in research and development to be able to develop and offer innovative products.
