Dyes are soluble organic synthetic or natural products (chromogenes with chromophores) of transparent nature. Only about 500 of several 10000 dyes are technically used and about 100 are added to plastics

Colorants are the collective name for all coloring soluble (dyes) or insoluble substances (pigments).

Pigments / Black-Batches / White-Batches

Pigments are anorganic or organic, colored or non-colored, powdered coating colorants of natural or synthetic origin which are insoluble in water, solvents or binders. In plastics it is possible to achieve covering, opaque up to translucent colorations, that means at the moment not yet transparent colorations. One differs between White-, Black- and colored pigments. The most common white pigments are oxides or sulphides of titanium respectively, zinc and antimony. Carbon black and ferric oxide are the most important black pigments. Compounds of iron, manganese, chromium, lead, zinc and molybdenum as well as higher molecular organic compounds are used as colored pigments. Moreover there are lustre pigments whith metallic finish, pearlescent pigments and irridescent pigments, fluorescent and phosphorescent pigments a.s.o. Of more than 100 known pigments only a very small quantity can be used in plastics. The hiding power-opacity of the pigments depends on the particle size and their refractance capability. The anorganic pigments are heat resistant and have a high hiding power even if the color intensity is low; the organic pigments, on the other hand, have a lower hiding power but a strong coloring effect. By adding small quantities of titanium dioxide the hiding power of organic pigments can be improved and at the same time insignificant changes in color may occur.

Color preparations

First priority for the selection of pigments and dyes is devoted to the intended application (inside or outside, direct or indirect solar radiation, radiation intensity, extrusion process, product duration, standards etc.) as well as the compatibility with the plastics, with other pigments, with contact substances like contents, finishing processes etc. Especially when using dyes it is very important to consider the light- and weathering fastness, blooming, migration. In addition to that there are demands for the very different final applications such as water fastness, peroxid washfastness, welding fastness, alkali- and acid fastness, bleaching fastness, finishing fastness, photocromic fastness and many more.

Light Stabilizers

These substances are to protect plastics against the damaging influence of light and to prevent consequential damage by the influence of light (ageing) respectively. The consequential damages are yellowing, embrittlement a.s.o. Polymers are protected against the light damages as follows: Lichtschutzmittel

- Special energy transfering substances ( such as nickel-derivates) also called quencher, deactivate excited state.
- Metal complexes of sulphur-containing compounds decompose formed hydrogen peroxide connections.
- Monomeric and polymeric HALS (hindered amine light stabilizers) intercept radicals.
- UV-Absorber with a high absorption capacity for ultraviolet radiation (such as substituted O-Hydroxybenzophenones, salicylic acid ester or hydroxyphenylene benztriazole etc.) prevent the light absorption of plastics at wavelengths < 420 nm, which correspond to the absorption maxima of the most polymers. The radiated energy is absorbed by the absorbers and converted into infra-red radiation (harmless heat).

Apart from their effectiveness light stabilizers have to be lightfast, must have a low inherent color, no tendency to discolor and a low volatility. The composition of our UV Masterbatches depends on the compatibility with the kind of plastic material which has to be protected, the spectral range and the intensity of the acting radiation, the heat stabilizers for the extrusion process and eventually the non-toxicity etc.
Infra-Red Absorbers

Special additives such as kaolin absorb infra-red radiation and are used as infra-red barriers in agricultural and horticultural applications. We test the effectiveness of active agents in our infra-red absorber masterbatches in our laboratories and in outdoor weathering.

Due to irreversible chemical and physical processes the characteristic material properties such as toughness, transparency, color etc. deteriorate. The most frequent causes are heat, light, energetic radiation, chemicals, weather, ozone or combinations of these parameters.
Ageing Inhibitors are stabilizers which slow down or inhibit the damaging influence of oxygene, ozone, light, temperature, humidity or heavy metals on plastics. Depending on their function these additives are classified in antioxidants, antiozoniants, light stabilizers which often are effective as radical interceptors.

About us

Company details

ARGUS – Masterbatches since 1994

Founded in 1994, the renowned family business ARGUS has been true to its principles for 20 years now: to continuously produce future-oriented masterbatches with innovative procedures to set the highest quality standards both at national and international level.

Our customers describe us as reliable and proficient, providing advice in a friendly manner. We’re grateful for that. And we constantly strive to keep up our image. We see ourselves as independent and flexible problem solvers for the challenges in the plastics market of today and the future. By communicating openly and with utmost transparency and by managing orders fast and efficiently, we worked hard to gain the trust of our customers, suppliers and partners.

Over the past years, we expanded our facilities four times: first in 1999, then we increased the size of our administration building in 2005, in 2008 we enlarged our storage facilities and finally, in 2013, we added another production hall, a new administration building and a new lab to our plant complex. In our laboratory facilities and technical center, we test compounds and batches before they enter production to supply our customers with high-quality products and to reduce subsequent corrections.

All this would not be possible without the help of our highly skilled personnel. They bring our ideas to life.
