Development of barrier film lines goes on with the packaging Industry. From simple PA/PE structure, to EVOH and triple barrier-block with asymmetrical structures and differentiated outer layers. Simultaneously we are also been developing and improving to extend the application range of available films. Seven and nine layers equipments produce double or triple barrier structures, to optimize the film performance and to provide for a further thickness reduction. Even more layers are now required to cater for new generation of packaging, with peelable/reclosable features. Our present range of dedicated machines for the barrier film industry comprises five, seven, nine and eleven layers lines, all fully integrated engineered as a single production system, from extruders to take off units and winding systems.

01. EXTRUDERS

The design criteria of our extruders, stand-alone or assembled on a Coex Flex platform, have always been marked by attention to detail and choice of first quality materials incorporating worldwide available Primary Standard quality components:

•Sturdy gearboxes and oversized thrust bearings, equipped with oil temperature control.
•A/C motors, air or (optional) water cooled, exhibiting low energy consumption, minimum maintenance and a greater drive dynamic control.
•Siemens AC Sychro Torque Motors directly coupled to the screws, available as alternative versions to the AC motors.
•Specially designed feed-zones, featuring smooth or multiple groove profiles.
•High to wear and corrosion resistant bi-metallic extrusion barrels.
•Energy saving extruder heating system with ceramic or (optional) infrared elements.
•Advanced drive speed control, targeted to reduced electrical consumption, always keeping in mind the respect for international standards and safety regulations.

The coexflex “platforms” are another of Macchi landmarks. All the hot section components are assembled on a sturdy baseplate and they result in a compact unit that is user friendly, economic to transport and easy to install. They can be used to easily substitute an obsolete extruder and transforming the line into a fresh co-extrusion system, totally guaranteed, while limiting the cost of the investment, or used as cornerstone for a new plant Today, companies that invest in a new film extrusion system typically choose a 3-layer co-extrusion line with the highest output designed into the center layer which optimizes productivity and line flexibility. Always in tune with the industry needs, Macchi can boast a large range of compact Coex Flex systems that meet any coextrusion film production requirements. The Coex Flex units are currently built in a variety of sizes that may fit any capacity range, from 100 to 1000 Kg/h.

5 LAYER P.O.D.

Five layers polyolefin-dedicated (POD) technology was introduced by Macchi since 2001 to foster film production economies and quality enhancement by expanding the product design option, mostly addressed to surface performances and opticals. The today driving force for the development of non barrier five layers film comes from a strong market demand for sustainable specialty packaging films where all the efforts are aimed towards better, stronger, thinner and price competitive films. Five screw coextruders become instrumental in the continuous race toward product downgauging, to compensate –using stiffer layers in dedicated layers- the excessive elasticity of metallocene or linear skins in very thin structures. Collation shrink and flexible packaging substrates are leading the pack, but new applications –such as specialty stretch and surface protection films- are already underway. Together with the synergistic developments permitted by the new resins, the POD concept lines offers unprecedented possibilities of film downgauging, output rates and product performances for new business opportunities all across the flexible packaging value chain.

04. WINDERS

Even an excellent film, if incorrectly wound can seriously affect the subsequent stages of printing or web converting. The winning product in the Macchi production range is the BO winding concept, offering a complete range of digitally controlled, gearless operated horizontal operation winding units. Thanks to their great versatility, the BO series of winders is nowadays considered to be one of the best performing on the world market.Offered in two types of construction patterns, both built on the same sturdy basic structure, the BO Basic are designed for surface winding only, whilst the BO Plus are featuring center,surface and gap winding possibilities. Already completed with a number of built-in features, a wide range of additional accessories is available to customize each unit to the specific target. Macchi has developed a modular shaft handling system applicable to any BO Plus winder. Different automation options for the shafts loading are available to enhance downstream operations
