PROTECTIVE SLEEVES FOR NOX AND LAMBDA PROBES

BIW has been the key producer of (cable) protective sleeves for probe applications for decades. The performance of our manufacturing facilities is currently at around 1,500,000 metres per week.

 
In this way, BIW proves its competence and is thus recognised as worldwide market leader in the silicone-coated glass silk hose product group. At the headquarters in Ennepetal, the full range of specialist hoses is developed and manufactured. Depending on customer requirements and uses, the hoses are characterised by the following features, for example:

 

 

Cost-optimisation by way of scalable textiles Basic constructions

Based on the decades of experience with our customers, we recommend the use of high temperature vulcanised silicone rubber. Hoses with high temperature vulcanised silicone rubber have excellent diameter consistency, an even distribution of wall thickness across the circumference, no particle adhesion and a smooth and spot-free surface. Based on the multiple stage manufacturing procedure in combination with internal compounding, the typical silicone "stickiness" can be avoided and a consistent high puncture strength can be ensured without the limitation of material or manufacturing related holes. In addition, these high temperature vulcanised hoses are easy for the producer to handle and effectively processed.

In part, the probe department has been furthered by some OEM protective sleeves with LSR coatings (LSR = Liquid Silicone Rubber). Of course, BIW also offers products on the basis of this liquid silicone treatment in order to meet the market requirements of all customers. A range of LSR probe hoses is currently
available with nominal widths of 3 to 16 millimetres. The currently specification requirements are thus easily met.

Probe hoses are experiencing a consistent increase in demand at BIW. And in order to meet both the increased quantities and the higher quality requirements, BIW is constantly investing in capacity and development. Alongside the current expansion of our knitting department with a capacity adaptation to include an additional ten production lines (see photograph), we also implement a range of measures to increase process performance and performance.  With the KAIZEN and LEAN production tools at our disposal, we are also able to meet the economic requirements of the market successfully. Our development department is also working on new qualities and products for future probe applications.

NEW SCOPES OF APPLICATION FOR CRYSTAL CLEAR
MATERIALS IN OPTICAL APPLICATIONS
Processing of optical Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) – an alternative to highly transparent thermoplastic and glass

 
The economic production of complex geometries in the silicone moulding process is well known. Optical liquid silicone types vulcanised to highly transparent elastomers represent new process challenges and alternatives. Optical silicone is an excellent alternative for the industry to glass and highly transparent thermoplastics such as PC or PMMI.

As well as the extremely positive mechanical properties, such as ageing and permanent temperature resistance up to 200 °C, particularly the transmission values and light refraction index are highly significant in the crystal clear application. Optical silicone is furthermore electrically insulated, water repellent and flexible at low temperatures.

LSR crystal clear – a new market potential for various industries.

The scope of application particularly comprises fibre optics for the automotive industry, LED components, Xenon  headlights, mobile phone cameras, street lighting and products for sensor technology. Moreover, the production of  lenses and other optical elements will be realised with silicone components in the future.

Transparent standard  thermoplastic and silicone materials generally tend to become yellow. Chemical processes are the reason for the discoloration. It is the nature of things. During the past years, some silicone manufacturers have addressed this topic in depth and have developed special formulas for these applications.

Advantage: crystal clear material for life, good transmission and light refraction values for optical fields of application.

The LSR components available in the market are generally produced in the LSR injection moulding process and are available in A and B component quantities of 20 and 200 kg. The difference from optical silicone is viscosity so that the optical LSR materials are low-viscous at room temperature when delivered - i.e. liquid, like water. This complicates processing and creates particular challenges for the injection moulding process.

Due to the high optical quality  requirements for the components, the handling of the article is an important step in the process chain. Automatic  extraction devices at the machine facilitate the handling.

The requirements for the optical surfaces demand enormous precision and purity with respect to tools as well as during production. BIW moulding has access to a clean room according to ISO 14644-1 Class 7 for this application.

HOT WATER AND KTW A sure thing with silicone piping of quality type SANIBIW WB

In November 2015, BIW finalised a successful own development with a certificate from the Hygieneinstitut in Gelsenkirchen. With the designation, SANIBIW WB, BIW is now able to offer silicone piping which meets all of the categories of the current KTW (Kunststoffe und Trinkwasser / Plastic and drinking water) guideline of the German Federal Environmental Agency  (Umweltbundesamt) for cold water (23 °C) and hot water (65 °C). This includes the first and most critical category "Pipes < 80 mm". For this category, the relationship between volume and surface is most unfavourable for migrative constituents from silicone into the drinking water.

BIW has succeeded in developing a mixture which meets the strict requirements of the KTW in this category. The Hygieneinstitut has, to this end, issued an appropriate certificate in accordance with the analysis and test report. What is special about the SANIBIW WB is the fact that the price-performance ratio is convincing since the own development uses a platinum-catalysed integration system which enables an economic advantage over the current benchmark.

Silicone piping of quality type SANIBIW WB may now  be used, with KTW approval, for many drinking water applications. These include, for example, connection pipes in large kitchens, shower pipes in sanitary areas plus special feed pipes in the food industry. The specifications in this application also increasingly demand the fulfilment of the KTW guideline for pipes < 80 mm in the hot water sector. Materials such as EPDM or PVC are not longer able to meet these requirements. Silicone piping of quality  type SANIBIW WB offers a clean solution.

Colours and reinforced pipe systems are no problem for BIW, since the materials used by BIW are qualified accordingly. FDA and BfR conformity is one of the basic requirements for KTW applications and this has naturally been taken into account. The recommended polyester to be used as armouring material is designed specifically for KTW applications.
