In cooperation with the Institute of Applied Chemistry Research in Changchun in north-eastern China, Zhejiang Hisun Group (Taizhou, Zheijang / China; www.hisunchem.com/about_en.asp) has begun using maize as a raw material for biodegradable plastics and products.
According to reports from the state news agency "Xinhua", the company intends to begin fairly soon with the production of PLA. Materials from this raw material could take over from the traditionally used crude oil, and could make a contribution to environmental protection, says a company statement. In Taizhou, a plant has been built with a capacity of 5,000 t/y, and a second line is at the planning stage. The PLA produced there is intended primarily for Europe and Japan.
