Xtrutech win International Trade Award

Independent ‘One Stop Shop’ Xtrutech Succeed on a Global Scale.
With a staff of just 9 employees, West Midlands based Xtrutech Limited has established itself in the industry as a leading ‘one stop shop’ for specialised mechanical replacement parts and technology for twin screw mixers in use around the World. Their outstanding success in trading overseas was recognised this week when they were awarded the West Midlands International Trade 2009, sponsored by HSBC Bank Plc at a presentation in Stoke on Trent this week.

With over 50 years of experience in twin screw extruder design between them, Graham Edwards, Managing Director and Richard Johnson, Sales Director, have positioned Xtrutech to provide the complete range of replacement screw parts and set the business apart from its competitors by offering more than the original equipment suppliers (OEM’s) and more than copied parts manufacturers.

Graham Edwards, Managing Director of Xtrutech said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the International Trade Award winners for the West Midland’s. From our simple beginnings as a start up business 7 years ago, we have always put great emphasis on overseas trading. We began by designing and selling machinery spare parts and service, all sourced from local engineering workshops. Even in the early days although turnover figures were low, 50% of sales went to export.”

Twin screw machines operate worldwide across a market worth an estimated £50m in processes such as plastics processing, powder paint manufacture as well as food and pharmaceutical mixing. Today, 60% of Xtrutech’s turnover is generated from international sales and emerging markets, whilst the business still sources 90% of its supplies through the UK.

Chairman of Judges, Ian Campbell OBE said: “Xtrutech displays the characteristics that so often enable an SME to succeed globally. Having located niche markets for their ranges of specialised mechanical replacement parts they have used manufacturing best practice and computerised systems to optimise production runs and lead times thus maximising profits. With 60% of their turnover from international sales, highly trained engineers and cutting edge IT skills in-house they were clear winners of the West Midlands International Trade Award.

On the back of a strong financial position, Xtrutech has now capitalised by moving into the design, manufacture and sales of new machines, the components of which have been sourced locally and assembled in their Newcastle-under-Lyme based factory. Managing Director, Graham Edwards continues: “Our turnover has increased year on year and last year with the launch of our own range of extruder/mixer machines we reached the magic £1m. This year we are already on course to achieve £1.5m and 60% will again go to export. We may be still a small company compared to most, but our exports have reached North and South America, Europe and Eastern Europe, the Middle and Far East and also Africa.”

Hayley Miller, Area Commercial Director for HSBC said: "We too are absolutely delighted with Xtrutech's award - recognising the hard work and unrelenting focus on the key components of their strategy, including international growth, over the past 7 years. From the outset, Graham and Richard have been undeterred in their belief that significant global market opportunities existed for a company who fully understand it's customers' requirements, needs and issues, and is prepared to offer both economic and innovative solutions.

Graham Edwards added: “However none of our achievements would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Xtrutech staff, so we are particularly pleased to receive the award on their behalf.”

With over 50 years of experience between them, Xtrutech has set itself apart from its competitors by offering more than the original equipment suppliers (OEM’s) and more than copied parts manufacturers. Backed by process know-how and many years of experience in twin-screw extruder design, Xtrutech provide industry trained Service Engineers and spare parts along with preventative maintenance programmes at competitive prices. The company manufactures its wear resistant screw elements to the highest standards to ensure compatibility with original parts. Screw elements and replacement barrels from Xtrutech coupled with advice on alternative screw profile designs can offer users improved performance, productivity and profits.

Hayley Miller, Area Commercial Director for HSBC added: “Through the provision of first class service and an excellent value for money offering across a far reaching international marketplace, the company has delivered an impressive year on year growth in turnover to a level of £1.5m in 2009.”

She continued: “Xtrutech is a profitable, very well managed and focused company who should be extremely proud of their achievements. We wish them further success as they move forward to represent the West Midlands in the national International Trade Company of The Year awards in March.”

The International Trade Awards 2009 sponsored by HSBC Bank Plc is the only national business awards to exclusively recognise the achievements of UK based exporters and importers. Xtrutech and 11 other regional finalists will now go forward to compete for the coveted ‘International Trade Company of the Year’ at the House of Lords in March 2010.
