Turkey: Import duties on commodity plastics reduced

Turkey has lowered its import duties on some commodity plastics, including PP homopolymer, LDPE and PVC from developing countries, effective 1 January 2010, foreign trade officials have confirmed to the newsletter Plastics Information Europe (PIE, Bad Homburg / Germany; www.pieweb.com). The decline in tariffs to 3% from 6.5% was expected by some observers to lead to a rise in Middle East imports.

The Middle East - in particular Iran and Saudi Arabia, where large amounts of new capacity were on the verge of being started up - was thought to be the target of the duty increase in January 2009. EU exporters were exempt from the levies.
