"In the next five years the engineering thermoplastics (ETP) market in Asia is expected to grow at about 8% per annum," says Hermann Althoff, Sr. VP of BASF's engineering plastics unit in Asia Pacific. In a vote of confidence for the company's ability to tap this burgeoning demand, the company recently announced its intent to boost compounding capacity in Shanghai, China, for polyamide and PBT engineering thermoplastics by 65,000 tonnes/year spread over two phases, whereby overall capacity will reach 110,000 tonnes/year by 2015. Phase one of the expansion is expected to be completed by 2013.
"In recent years, we have successfully developed many new applications for our customers in China especially in the automotive and electrical/electronics industries. We are convinced that we will continue to drive this trend," says Althoff.
