Standard thermoplastics: Hefty hikes in early February

Buyers of standard thermoplastics in western Europe had difficulty digesting the hefty price increases served up in early February by producers seeking to restore margins, the newsletter "Plastics Information Europe” (Bad Homburg / Germany; www.pieweb.com) says in a trend report. Polyolefins saw nearly triple-digit hikes, while PVC managed about half as much and PS a third. In the EPS segment, where converters are staggering under extreme weather conditions, prices remained unchanged.

With supplies dwindling due to production cutbacks and the absence of imports, and converters feeling compelled to order without assessing future needs, higher prices are certain, PIE says.
