Robot Vision: Greater efficiency and reliability thanks to the combination of robotics and image processing

(Bayreuth/Düsseldorf, October 27, 2010) Image processing makes robots able to "see": the ability to depict objects very precisely and the flexibility of industrial robotics produce the ideal symbiosis.
Some automation solutions only become possible at all in combination with image processing.
"An example of this is in detecting the position of components," explains Preccon's managing director Hartmut Lindner. "This enables completely new automation solutions that will significantly increase efficiency in handling as well as in logistics. For example, when pallets have to be unpacked by a robot, a camera integrated in the robot's gripper can detect the position of containers on the pallet," continues Lindner.

Another possible application for the combination of robotics and image processing is in quality assurance: when the parts that have to be inspected are in complicated positions, the robot can either move them into the field of the vision system or itself be equipped with a camera. This reliable yet economical concept has proved itself at, amongst others, an automotive supplier with exceptionally high quality standards in manufactured plastic components for the interior fittings of passenger cars. The test procedure developed is orientated towards the real conditions actually applying in the car.

When the 2-D image processing procedure reaches its limits, Preccon Robotics offers 3-D object detection using the light-section method. The 3-D data is evaluated by means of a greyscale-coded plot of the elevations. The procedure is used in order to inspect the points of contact pins with a high degree of precision. Testing accuracy of 40µm can be achieved.
