There are many reasons for the success of any custom plastics processing business including the machine technology used, the people in place who optimize that technology, the management, markets and customers within those markets. Prism Plastics, a custom injection molder headquartered in Chesterfield, MI, has long been an automotive supplier and in spite of the struggles of that market over the past few years the company has remained successful.
Gerry Phillips, vice president and co-owner of Prism Plastics, recently talked to PlasticsToday about some of his formulas for success in an extremely tough manufacturing environment, and his plans for the future of Prism.
Phillips believes that diversity in markets is key, and while Prism remains committed to the automotive industry, the company has moved into the medical market as well. "We like automotive; we like the volumes in automotive and will continue to grow that business," he said. "But automotive is a bit of a roller coaster ride sometimes. To smooth out our growth plans we have moved into the medical market and plan to continue that. We've found that diversity is great."
