Polymers for Electricity and Electronics. Materials, Properties, and Applications

Recently, several excellent books have been published, which are mainly concentrating on theoretical aspects of this subject. It appears that an updated publication focusing on the practical side and complementing them should be useful. The goal of this book is to provide a ready reference for professionals working in industrial practice and as a textbook for advanced students of electrical and electronic engineering, material science, of polymer science and engineering as well for the use of educators, attorneys and marketing specialists. The book introduces readers to the fundamentals, basic principles, properties, and applications of electrical polymers. It provides the principles in an extended and accessible way, as well as including examples of state-of-the-art scientific issues. It evaluates emerging technologies such as light emitting diodes, soft electronics, and conductive fibres used for smart clothing or electromagnetic shields, and explains the advantages of conductive polymers as well as their processability and commercial use. In addition, appendices that detail the electrical properties of selected polymers as well as list additional ASTM and corresponding international testing Standards and methods for testing electrical properties are also included. The introduction concentrates on basic principles involved in electrical properties of materials. The second chapter covers polymeric materials with major attention to the structure-properties relationships and then to standard process technologies. The main purpose of this chapter is to include the basic concepts of polymer science and technology deemed to be necessary to understand polymers as valuable materials used in electrical and electronic applications. Chapter 3 covers specific electrical and electronic behaviour of polymers not only as well-established insulating materials, but also as conductive materials of equal importance. Chapter 4 provides essential information on special polymers, including intrinsically conductive and ferroelectric polymers and others. Subsequent chapters deal with some examples of specific industrial fabrication methods, examples of formulations (essentially compounding concepts and starting formulations for different applications) and practical applications of polymers and polymer-based materials and with essential measuring methods. The concluding chapter is covering current essential developments and trends. At the end of each chapter, there are numerous references to be used for additional information and/or an in-depth study. In addition, a list of recommended publications for additional reading on the subjects covered in that chapter is provided as bibliography. The appendices include the table of electrical properties of selected polymers, list of testing standards, acronyms and abbreviations and a general bibliography. A rather comprehensive glossary is also included. Throughout the text, SI units are used preferably, although occasionally other units are also shown (such as degrees of Fahrenheit for temperature, pounds for weight, pounds per square inch for pressure, Poise for viscosity).
