Plastic wall-plug king Artur Fischer receives lifetime achievement award


A standing ovation greeted German inventor Artur Fischer as he accepted the lifetime achievement award at the European Inventor Award 2014 ceremony in Berlin on June 17. Considered one of the most prolific inventors of all time—he holds more than 1100 applications for patents and utility models—the 95 year old is perhaps best known throughout the world for coming up with a small plastic plug in 1958 that revolutionized the construction and do-it-yourself markets. The expansion plug, also known as the Fischer wall plug, allows screws to be fastened in materials that otherwise would not support heavier objects.
