Japanese injection machine builders were thin on the ground at the Chinaplas trade show, reportedly now preferring the DMP Global Industrial Fair in Dongguan this December that enjoys official support from the Japan Plastics Machinery Industry Association. One vendor with a presence ay Chinaplas, however, was Niigata Machine Techno (Saitama), in part to promote the opening of its Shanghai office and service center last December.
Denny Yanagibayashi, president of the Shanghai operation, says 40% of its business is already derived from China and this ratio is increasing at the expense of more developed markets in Japan and the U.S. "Moving forward, we also see India and Vietnam developing as key markets," Yanagibayashi told PlasticsToday at the Chinaplas show.
Niigata is also focusing more on mid-size machines of 350- and 450-tonnes clamping force for the automotive sector nowadays. "Other Japanese machine builders are now manufacturing presses in China and we can't compete with them (on price)," said Yanagibayashi. Specialty presses for light guide panels is another focus area for Niigata. Whereas most production of light guide panels was in South Korea and Taiwan previously, this is now gradually shifting to China, according to Yanagibayashi.
