According to Cognis, the new products combine technical performance and sustainability benefits. Within its FoamStar EF series, they are among the most efficient defoamers requiring 30 to 50 % less dosage in order to achieve the benchmark performance of mineral oil defoamers. Besides a lower VOC contribution and very low odour they effectively prevent micro foam - making them ideal for use in premium paints that contain less than 100 grams of VOC per litre. They also offer very high persistency and fast bubble break times. For example, at a 40 % lower dosage, FoamStar EF 20 and FoamStar EF 22 have a bubble break time of less than 100 seconds in 50 g/l paint.FoamStar EF series have bubble break times less than 100 seconds at 40 % lower dosage compared to common mineral oil defoamers. Bubble break time less than 150 seconds is considered as very good. Cognis' two latest innovations in hyperbranched polymer defoamer technology are delivered in an essentially emission-free hydrocarbon matrix. FoamStar EF 20 and FoamStar EF 22 have a VOC content of around 0.3 % (according to the US EPA method 24), while conventional mineral oil defoamers contain an average of 4 %. This, coupled with the fact that much smaller amount of the FoamStar EF series defoamers is needed, means that the total VOC content of paints is reduced.
