Marine litter: Surfrider Foundation´s “Ocean Initiatives” 2010

“There is no small pollution”. That is the slogan under which the Surfrider Foundation Europe (Biarritz / France; www.surfrider.eu) is calling on the public to participate in this year’s “Ocean Initiatives”, held from 18-21 March 2010. In 2009, the initiatives attracted more than 20,000 volunteers worldwide, who cleaned up 500 sites in 24 countries.

The issue of marine litter has become an integral part of the environmental agenda of many organisations, with industry also increasingly doing its bit. The European plastics manufacturers’ association PlasticsEurope (Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticseurope.com) says the plastics industry “is seriously concerned about the issue of marine litter,” adding that “education is needed to change littering behaviour and to this end, industry is very active in promoting end of life waste management on land.”
