MALAYSIA: Petronas Awards Technip FEED Contract For Proposed ‘Rapid' Project

The $20-billion project involves a 300,000-b/d refinery; a naphtha cracker to produce about 3-million t/y of ethylene, propylene, C4 and C5 olefins, and downstream units. The petrochemical units "will enhance the value of the olefinic streams” from the cracker and produce products "such as polyethylene, polypropylene, synthetic rubbers and other petrochemicals products,” Technip said. Petronas and BASF recently signed a Heads of Agreement to establish a new venture to own, develop, construct and operate world-scale facilities for the production of iso-nonanol, highly reactive polyisobutylene, non-ionic surfactants, methanesulfonic acid and precursor materials, as part of the Rapid project.(Syed Rashid Ali, Karachi, Pakistan)
