A major elastomers expansion from Dow Chemical Co. is featured in this week’s Material Insights video. Dow is opening a new polyolefin elastomers plant in Thailand and increasing capacity for those materials in Texas and Spain. The expansion in total will increase Dow’s annual global capacity for those products by 550 million pounds. Its current capacity in those areas is 1.5 billion pounds.
The new capacity is needed to handle rising demands in multiple markets, according to Dow elastomers global business director Luis Cirihal. Plastics market analyst Balaji Singh said Dow's new Thailand plant — in a joint venture with Siam Cement — is an especially big opportunity for the firm.
