LIST AG DRY PROCESSING -, INTELLIGENT PROCESSING

LIST WINS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FOR AN INNOVATIVE SOLVENT‐FREE POLYMERIZATION PROCESS THAT CUTS COST IN HALF.

A new solvent‐free polymerization process, developed by the LIST Company has won a GPEC 2009 Environmental Award for New Process Technology from the SPE Global Plastics Environmental Conference in Orlando. Forty years ago, LIST’s founder, Heinz List, was convinced that processing with minimal solvent, or even no solvent at all, would yield huge results, ranging from lower cost, to higher efficiency, to environmental benefits. Over the years, this forward thinking process has been developed and perfected for a wide variety of applications.
The technology that won this year’s environmental award took four years to develop and includes a process that reacts liquid monomer with catalyst into a polymer in a single‐shaft, plug‐flow Kneader
Reactor without solvents then transfers the viscous polymer to a second specially designed twinshaft Kneader Finisher, where secondary polymers, additives and fillers may be added, before it is underwater or strand pelletized.
The first full‐scale commercial system is now being built to produce 11 million lb/yr of an undisclosed polymer compound. “We expect production costs to be cut in half versus the conventional solventbased process.” The process will also be presented at K 2010 Show in Düsseldorf, in October.
With a U.S. office in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a branch office in SIngapore, LIST is the worldwide technology leader and forerunner in “Dry” or concentrated processing focusing on processes that operate without the use of solvents. LIST develops and implements innovative solutions for the polymer, chemical and other process industries that are effective, efficient, reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly.
