Renewably sourced plastics continue to make steady gains, but the industry is changing rapidly and some suppliers are failing. That's a quick impression from Innovation Takes Root (ITR), a bioplastics conference held this week by Nature Works in Orlando, FL.
The major positives boosting the industry and contributing to overall double-digit sales gains include:
*Major corporations continue to adopt and implement sustainability programs that encourage increased use of renewably sourced plastics because of their ability to reduce a component's carbon footprint. Officials at Lego, 3M, and IBM discussed their interest in bioplastics at ITR.
*The new U.S. Farm legislation is expected to provide new financial incentives for the bio economy.
