ICL-IP announces the completion of the registration of FR-245 and FR-370 under REACH

ICL-IP is pleased to announce hereby that, since August 2010, in accordance with Article 20(2) of regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, better known under “the REACH Regulation”, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has confirmed the registration of FR-245 (CAS # 25713-60-4) and of FR-370 (CAS # 19186-97-1)
FR-245, since its introduction ten years ago, has gained a leading role in the flame retardation of HIPS, ABS and ABS/PMMA alloys. Fruit of the joint venture between the Japanese Group Dai-Ichi Kogyo Seiyaku (DKS) and ICL-IP, FR-245 is a melt blendable flame retardant combining good impact properties with UV stability. Moreover, being a bulky molecule, FR-245 is not susceptible to migrate from styrenic polymer matrix even under severe thermal conditions.
New FR-245 based systems have been recently introduced in the market to produce UL 94 V-0/V-1 styrenic copolymers without any need for antimony trioxide. This effect could not be reproduced with other commonly used products for these applications without affecting significantly impact and flow properties.
The uniqueness of melt blendable FR-370, tris(tribromoneopentyl) phosphate is a combination of both high aliphatic bromine (70%) and phosphorous (3%) on the same molecule that contributes to fire retardant efficiency with excellent UV and light stability.
Properties not achievable with the previously used FR systems, are now at hand and FR-370 opens new opportunities by broadening the applications in which PP systems can be used. New applications include exposed sections which require light stability , brightness, good initial colors.
