Haas Automation (Oxnard, CA) will exhibit its range of high-performance CNC machine tools at EMO 2015, Europe's largest machine tool exhibition in Milan in October, but it's a safe bet that all eyes will be on the Haas F1 car, at least initially. The car on display at the event does not represent the livery or design of the final iteration, but it makes a darn good proxy. The new chassis of the final version of the automobile currently is undergoing wind-tunnel testing at the legendary Scuderia Ferrari workshop in Maranello, Italy. And then it's off to the races in 2016, when it will compete in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.
Once they take their eyes off the Haas F1 car, show visitors will have an opportunity to admire other applications where speed also can be of the essence. The new UMC-750SS, a high-speed version of the company's universal five-axis machining center, will be among the systems on display. The UMC-750SS is a five-axis, 40-taper model equipped with a 15,000 rpm inline direct-drive spindle, high speed 40+1 tool side-mount tool changer, and powerful, high-speed machining software. It offers travels of 762 x 508 x 508 mm, 30.5 m/min rapids, and an integrated high-speed, dual-axis trunnion table.
