HDPE foam blends target auto application

High melt-strength (HMS), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) may play a role in automobile lightweighting if development work at Tosoh Corp. (Tokyo) proceeds to plan.

Tosoh has found that blending this HMS HDPE with polypropylene (PP) and foaming the blend can enable higher foaming ratio to be achieved and hence lower weight. Door trim applications are seen as one potential outlet for the blend.

Potential applications of HMS HDPE are not limited to the automotive sector, however: the heat-resistant resin can also be used in extrusion coating of release paper used in industrial applications.
