Evonik to increase precipitated silica and isophorone capacities

The company will gradually expand global capacity at its existing plants by 25 % through 2014. Investments will be made in the mid double-digit million EUR range. Total capacity expansion is expected to be in the six-digit tonne region and will be implemented mainly at the company's existing silica sites in Asia and Europe. In May 2010 Evonik had announced capacity expansion for precipitated silicas at its subsidiary Insilco Ltd. in Gajraula, India. Evonik expects the market to grow substantially over the next few years. Product innovations, e. g. the speciality silicas Sipernat 288 and 268, designed for highly transparent silicone rubber applications, such as keypads for cell phones, computers, and remote controls, are also expected to strengthen the company's market position. Evonik produces precipitated silica at ten sites in eight countries around the world.
In addition, the company intends to construct a new world-scale production plant for isophorone and isophorone diamine. Production is scheduled to start in 2013. A suitable site is being sought, particularly in Southeast Asia and China. Evonik currently has production sites in Herne and Marl, Germany, in Antwerp, Belgium, as well as in Mobile, AL, USA.
