Energ-Ice awarded Life Environmental Prize at Green Week 2014

"This is a clear tribute to the power of science and technology to innovate what is essential to human progress, while preserving precious resources.” The Energ-Ice project focused on reducing the environmental impact of energy-using products, such as cold appliances, by taking action at the design stage, where the pollution caused during the product's life cycle can be best prevented. The project showcased an innovative polyurethane foaming technology for manufacturing the insulation filling of cold appliances, such as refrigerators and freezers, using cyclopentane as a blowing agent. Vanni Parenti, Dow project leader, summarised: "As a result, the overall energy-saving objectives of the project were clearly demonstrated. This technology offers up to 10 % in energy savings compared to the best-in-class appliances available today which are A+ and A++ labeled, with a more sustainable process, offering a 10 % carbon footprint reduction as certified by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.” Dow, the Cannon Group companies Afros and Crios, and Federchimica are partners in the Energ-Ice Project funded by Life, the EU's financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects. The project Energ-Ice has been prized as one of the 25 Best Life Environment projects - out of 85 projects finished and evaluated in 2013. It has also been recognised as one of the six Best Life Information projects - out of 21 that finished and were evaluated by 2013. Both recognitions allowed Energ-Ice to be elected to participate in the "Best of the Best” six projects for all categories. As a result, the Member States selected Energ-Ice as one of "Best of the Best” Life Environment and Information project 2013. The Best Life-Environment Project selection follows a lengthy evaluation process based on a set of best practice criteria, developed by EU Member States in collaboration with the European Commission. These criteria address the key issues of the projects contribution to the immediate and long-term environmental, economic and social improvements, the degree of innovation and transferability, the relevance to policy and cost-effectiveness. Today, resource efficiency and the sustainability of products is becoming as important of an element as chemical safety. For over two decades, Dow has been working to provide a portfolio of performance solutions that bring forward energy efficient cold storage in domestic, as well as commercial appliances. As an example, the Pascal technology from Dow is a patented polyurethane breakthrough technology processed under new manufacturing conditions that significantly improves household appliance energy efficiency with sustained design and productivity.
