Complete System for Recycling PET Fibre and Film Waste

A highlight in the Gneuss booth (Gneuss Kunststofftechnik GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen Germany) is a complete system for the direct recycling of PET fibre or film wastes. This innovative line consists of a cutter- feeder combination with the MRS 110 extruder, a Melt Filtration System RSFgenius and an Online Viscometer VIS. With this line, light and fluffy fibre and film waste can in one step be processed into products comparable to those made from virgin material.


Since its market launch at the last „K“, the Multi Rotation System extruder from Gneuss has quickly established itself as one of the key technologies for processing PET bottle flakes. More than 15 of these special extruders have already been sold for film, fibre and repelletizing applications worldwide – in Germany, Russia, Brazil, Argentina and North America. The main advantage of this extruder is that it permits the processing of PET without pre-drying but by using a simple water ring vacuum system to process the PET to a high quality product. This is achieved by means of its unique and patented processing section. Based on a conventional single screw extruder, the Multi Rotation Section (MRS) is a drum containing eight satellite single screws, driven by a ring gear and pinion transmission. The “barrels” cut into the drum are approximately 30 % open and provide optimum exposure of the melt. Thanks to this design, the devolatilizing performance is fifty times greater than that of a conventional single screw extruder – and this at a vacuum of only 25 to 40 mbar. By avoiding the need for a high vacuum system and pre- drying, the MRS is an extremely economically efficient alternative to conventional technologies. Further arguments in its favour are the simple and rugged design together with an attractive price.
In addition to the excellent devolatilizing performance, the MRS also offers excellent decontamination performance. Even heavily contaminated post consumer waste can be processed to odour neutral products. Earlier this year, the US American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an LNO (letter of non objection) for the MRS extruder for reprocessing material for the food industry. Analyses by the Fraunhofer Institute show, that when processing post consumer material, the devolatilizing performance of the MRS extruder not only efficiently extracts water but also decontaminates the material so that up to 100 % PET bottle flakes can be processed to food quality containers.
