Production and output of Chile's plastics industry decreased by about 17% year-on-year in crisis-ridden 2009, according to Pablo Escobar, president of the Chilean plastics association Asipla (Santiago / Chile; www.asipla.cl). Last year, 700,000 t of plastics were processed, while sales levels stood at USD 2.5 bn. This year Escobar predicts a recovery, with sales reaching USD 2.65 bn and processed volumes 740,000 t.
Asipla believes exports of processed goods will reach 60% in 2010, up 10% from current levels. Chilean manufacturers increasingly are turning their sights on Asian countries as end markets for their goods - especially China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
