Cheng Shin Rubber to build tyre plant in Indonesia

The new plant will make tyres for cars and motorcycles for the Southeast Asian markets. According to an article in The ­Jakarta Globe, Cheng Shin will face tight competition from established tyre producers as well as new competitors.South Korean tyre maker Hankook Tire opened a USD 350 million plant in Cikarang, West Java, in September 2013. Hankook is seeking by 2018 to invest up to USD 1.1 billion in the plant, which will act as an export base for North America and the Middle East, as well as a regional hub for emerging Asian markets.Italian company Pirelli has set up a joint venture with the automotive component-maker subsidiary of Astra International to build a USD 120 million motorcycle tyre factory in Indonesia.The plant is expected to be fully operational in 2014. Among local tyre producers are Gajah Tunggal, the largest tyre producer in Southeast Asia, and Multistrada Arah Sarana.
