Anti-trust authorities in Spain and Italy have launched a probe into alleged price-fixing of several producers of plastics packaging for fruit and vegetables. The Spanish regulatory authority Comisión Nacional de Competencia (CNC; www.cncompetencia.es) says it searched the offices of leading market players on 2 March 2010. The Italian competition authority Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (www.agcm.it) reportedly conducted simultaneous searches on the Apennin Peninsula at CNCs behest.
However, CNC emphasised that the investigations do not constitute proof that the companies in question did in fact engage in price fixing. Should the suspicions prove correct, the packaging producers could be subject to fines of up to 10% of their annual revenue.
