Arburg combines medical and micromolding in its PLASTEC West booth (3911), running a 55-ton Allrounder equipped with dual screws for optimum metering of melt. The 8-mm primary screw is fed pre-plasticized material from a 15-mm screw jutting off at a 45° angle. Jürgen Giesow told PlasticsToday that this ensures first-in first-out shooting of material, with a 0.9g shot distributed between eight cavities for parts that weigh around 0.05g each.
Giesow said Arburg’s machine design is adaptable to accommodate a variety of tooling. The machine at the show has 15.5 inches between its tiebars, but Arburg can expand that distance to 18.5 inches. The pill capsule being molded at the show is made from LyondellBasell polyethylene in a six-second cycle. Heitec supplied the hot runner with the tooling from Schreck Kunststofftechnik GmbH....
