All-olefin instrument panel wins SPE grand award

An all-olefin full instrument panel using contour stitching won the grand award in the Society of Plastics Engineer's annual automotive innovation awards competition. Winners were announced last night at a banquet in Livonia, MI.

"The purpose of this technology is to provide a cut-and-sew replacement product that is lower cost, lower weight, recyclable and provides OEMs with considerable design freedom," says Edward Wenzel, research engineer at Inteva Products (Troy, MI). The system saves up to 50% compared to a cut-and-sewn leather instrument panel, according to Inteva.
